UCSF Cure
My insulin pump educator told me about a current study at UCSF. They are giving small
doses of chemotherapy to newly diagnosed diabetics (type 1) and it is curing the virus that
is attacking the pancreas causing diabetes. It already proved successful in mice. Once
the virus is killed, the pancreas returns to producing insulin. So: for type I diabetics a
possible cure, and for type IIs a cure thru WLS and/or no/low/ only wholegrain carb diets. Maybe
someday there will be no more diabetes!!!!

God bless our researchers. I hope this is true, and not another scam with big headlines trying to make money to line their own pockets. If thru this has far reaching ramifications. Fingers crossed!
WLS does not cure diabetes. I've mentioned before: once you are diagnosed with diabetes, you've already lost about 80% of your beta cells in the pancreas and those will never be replaced. NEVER. But, a person at normal weight can live well on 20% beta cells and stay off of medications if all remains the same over time.
If you had a 100% return of your beta cells then I would agree that diabetes is cured. Fortunately, WLS allows your glucose levels to decrease, and that eases the signs and symptoms of the diabetes to a point where you can go off of medication. But, being off of medication does not mean that you are cured of diabetes. Being off medication means that your body is dealing with the blood glucose well, or that your insulin resistance has eased off, and you might be considered to be in a form of remission. We know diabetes is insidious, and you will have it for the rest of your life. There is no cure for diabetes as of today. And here's an interesting point: once you are off medications, you can choose to stay off of them by remaining in tight control for as long as possible. However, there is evidence that thru aging, disability, injury, and other diseases that the diabetes may rear it's ugly head at any time.
