Hi all,
I am Type I diabetic and I am having RNY surgery done on 2/11.
I have some concerns about low blood sugars and what people do for them.  I was going to use the humalog pen but was not sure if anyone else had any suggestions???  My biggest fear is not being able to hold any sugars after surgery in case I do have an episode....

Thanks and Happy New Year~

Hi,
I had the same concerns as you.  I spoke with the dietitian as she recommended the glucose tablets and to see how I did with them.  I'm also going to keep apple juice on hand.  My surgery is on tuesday and I'm planning to test my sugar level about every 2 hours.  Another diabetic told me that she uses diluted juice and has no problems.  She also said that if it feels like it is dropping she will eat some soda crackers.  Apparently they work well to stop a low sugar level, for her anyways.

good luck

Hi,

I am a Type 1 diabetic and I am having RNY surgery on January 27th.  My dietician told me that if I have a low blood sugar to drink milk.  I hope all goes well and I will be interested to find out your results after surgery.  Take care.

Hi,

Good luck with your upcoming surgeries! I had open RNY almost 5 yrs ago in March and I am Type 1 diabetic. For low blood sugars, in the beginning, I always used glucose tabs. Milk or juices may upset the pouch in the beginning.

If I can answer any questions you may have, feel free to e-mail me, I rarely get online anymore.
Happy New Year!

I'm type 1, had RNY in June.  From day one I used fruit juice (with no added sugar, 100% juice) per my surgeon.  No dumping if no added sugar.  It works beautifully.  I dump pretty easily (thank God, as it controls my carb addiction), so couldn't use crackers as processed carbs make me sick.  The only carbs I can eat are whole carbs; nothing white.  I became lactose intollerant with the surgery, so can't drink milk.  I am on an insulin pump, and my total daily dose has gone from around 200 + to 50 - 60 units a day.  Good luck.

How are you doing?  How are you handling your diabetes?

I am scheduled for RNY surgery this month.   I am a Type 1 diabetic of 50+ years and wear an insulin pump.  I am ready to being this upward climb and would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you.

I'm a type I on an insulin pump.  I am about 3 months out.  I was also having type II insulin resistance.  My insulin needs went from about 90 units/day to about 25 units/day almost immediately after surgery.  I have had very few lows, and have been able to treat with Milk or glucose tabs (but mostly milk).   So far I have lost almost 60 lbs and am feeling better than ever.  Good luck!

p.s. it's not what you're supposed to do, but I am now changing my site once a week and it's working beautifully!  Still do lots of finger sticks though.

I am also a diabetic (11yrs now). My endo isn't sure if I'm type 1 or type2. On an insulin pump.  Went from 120u. per day to 27u. per day after my RNY 4 months ago.  I have had some sugar lows,  I drink a bit of Orange juice (yummy, I love orange juice)
