Thank you, Ros-mari!

What you said does make perfect sense and in the past few days, I have drastically increased my intake of fluids. I also know I need to increase my exercise, which I will be working on as well. As for the liquid, I use the poland spring sport bottles and I refill them with my crystal light. So, the bottle is almost 24 ounces, so I try to get in 3 full bottles. Yesterday, I  did it! Today, I only got in 2, but better than nothing right? And tomorrow, I will aim for 3 again, but if I can get more, I will. =) I have a ton of errands tomorrow and I have my neice and nephew with me, but I will try to focus on the liquid while we are out, while I drive, etc. It takes a lot of concentration and effort. LOL Maybe after a while, it will be more normal feeling and take less effort to remember. But, I am sure I will always have to put the effort in, which I can deal with. Especially if I am healthier... =)

Thanks again for the info and  will check in with my doc about going back on the metformin...she had taken me off, but maybe I need it again....we shall see! =)

Thanks again, Heather

Heather,

Type 2 diabetes is "primarily" the result of insulin resistance. Most type 2's actually produce more insulin than normal people but it is resistant. The glucose is not able to join with the insulin to be utilized by the body. The best way to decrease blood sugars is to exercise. It makes insulin less resistant and therefore more available to the body. If all things remain equal (intake), increasing exercise will decrease the amount of insulin required.

I'm sure you are exercising but try to up it a bit each day, walk further, do arm/shoulder exercises while sitting, and so on.

Keep your eye on the real prize- better health and being able to do more.

Teresa

Thanks so much for your info! I have been running around a lot with the holidays and all and I have been trying to walk further into stores and such. But, I must admit, I haven't really implemented a regular exercise program. My husband gave me an mp3 player for christmas, which I had asked him for, because I want to start walking on the path outside our apartment. It's not very long, but I figure I can just turn around and go back up and down. So, I will have to be good about that. You are right about the insulin resistance, for me anyway. I am verrrry resistant and needed to take a lot of insulin to make my body notice it, I guess.

Anyway, I appreciate your reply and I will mosty deinately give it a shot!
Plus, I have decided that I need to drink more--it's been really hard for me to get in all my liquid, but it is a must and is just something I have to do, right? And, so is my walking. =)
So, in the morning, I am putting up a dry erase board on my closet door and I am going to write my daily goals and I will check them off as I go throughout the day....

Here's to hoping it will help... =)
Thank you again!
Hugs, Heather

I think the dry erase board is a great idea. I've been thinking of doing something similar because there are times I get so hectic or am just so out of it, I forget to do something silly like brush my teeth! (I keep a toothbrush and toothpaste in my desk drawer at work for just such days  )

LOL I hate to laugh, but that sounds like me! What a terrible feeling to get in the car, on the way someplace and realize that you didn't brush your teeth! LOL I hear ya on that one! So, I didn't put the board up yet--grrr--because I was running around and tonight my nephew is here sleeping over and tomorrow, I have him and my neice for the day, so....the board must wait til after that, but at least I have been really trying with my liquid intake and I am still trying to eat slow--it's harrrd LOL
Anyway...good luck!!

Talk to you soon!

Making new habits is the hardest part of postop life. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Hi Heather!
Let me give you some suggestions for drinking water...I have always had a hard time with plain water so I drink alot of crystal lite or flavored waters...propel is good and others. In the beginning i couldn't drink the whole packets but over time I was able to...try adding a 1/3 - 1/2 packet of the powder to a water bottle and see if you can get it down quicker. I think it makes a big difference. If you can drink 4 a day you are at your goal of 64 oz.

I have type 2 diabetes and have had it since 1989. I have been on oral meds mostly as insulin didn't really help. When I got on the max dose of meds my doctor recommended RNY and I had it done 2 years ago. I am now at goal weight but my diabetes never went away. My pancreas is damaged and will not repair itself. Eventually I will probably be on insulin. I now take janumed and actos. My doctor recently increased my actos but it caused weight gain so I am back to the original dose and I may go on levemir insulin instead. My A1C went from 6.1 to 7.1 in about 6-8 months and it's very discouraging. The good news is that I am healthy and have low risk for heart disease or cancer because I am now at normal BMI. Everyone (including the doctors) all kept telling me to wait 6 months and I will see a change but it never happened and it's now worse than before. I am trying to monitor my BS readings at different times of the day so the doctor can get a better picture of when the worse times are for me.

My endocrinologist said that she felt that the high A1C levels probably have nothing to do with food. I really haven't changed my diet much so it could be true.

Good luck and I hope YOUR diabetes gets better.

Sherri,

I realize this post is from several months ago, but I felt compelled to reply.  I had surgery just over three years ago and now have a BMI of just at 25, or normal, basically.  I had very complicated insulin resistant diabetes pre-surgery and was on 100 units of insulin a day but it was far from under control.  I had the surgery in part to hopefully throw my diabetes into resolution.  And I did, for about two years.  I had great A1c levels, anywhere from 5-7, without any insulin or medication.

For the last 6 months or so, I have recognized the symptoms and went into serious denial.  No appetite, losing a little more weight, nauseua, thirst, on and on.  I knew it was my sugars, but I did not want to believe it.  I would schedule and cancel dr, appts right and left.  I finally had one scheduled for this past Thursday, so Tuesday night I bit the bullet and checked my sugar - it was 583.  Who knows how long I have been in such bad shape.

My doctor knows me all too well, and while the number upset him, he was not shocked at my behavior.  He has put me on Levemir, 55 units at night, and then Starlix at every meal.  Starlix is supposed to be advantageous because you take it right as you eat so it is apparently more flexible.

My issues are dealing with the emotional aspects of having the diabetes return and fear of gaining my weight back, which is what insulin always made me do in the past.  My pancreas has pretty much shut down, and so this will be a lifetime regime.  I am angry and sad.  But I am here trying to find out how others deal, so that is a good sign, I guess.

Thanks for telling your story.  It did make me realize that I am so much healthier in other ways because of the surgery, and this is something that can be managed.

Oh, I did want to add that exercise is extremely important...I go to the gym religiously about 5x a week. I do not like walking, I use the elliptical, bike and do classes and I am going to start pilates reformer classes. I think without the exercise my BS readings would be over 200.

You are so young and probably have lots more energy so if you can, I suggest joining Curves....that's what I did for 5 1/2 years and kept going till 7 mos post op - then I joined a full service gym. Try it if you can!
