Looking for type 2 diabetics that have had the lap band done

I am so torn between the lap band and the gastric bypass. I have been diagnosed with diabetes, and have borderline high blood pressure. I have about 100 pounds to lose. I'm hearing so many different things about how the lap band wouldn't benefit me. Has anyone here with type 2 had successful weight loss with the band?

It's not that you won't lose weight with theband if you're diabetic--it's that your diabetes will only improve with the band if your diabetes is highly weight dependent, which not everyone's is. With the procedures that alter intestines (RNY and DS), the intestinal adjustment often causes diabetes to improve or even go into full remission immediately after surgery due to the moving of intestines rather than as a result of a large weight loss.

I have type 2 diabetes, and that is why I am getting the DS. One long term study on hundreds of patients showed a 98.9% remission rate of type 2 diabetes with the DS--THE BEST remission (many surgeons even say "cure") rate of any form of WLS.

I'm type II diabetic and getting lap band next week.  If you have "metabolic syndrome" it will help you quite a great deal.  Metabolic syndrome is those persons with the pot belly and not too much fat elsewhere.

Studies from Autralia show 90 percent of patients with lap band are medication free at five years.  it is not instantaneous as the malabsorptive proceedures are.

I've lost about 30 lbs pre op and am finally off insulin.  Still on four other meds.  Looking forward to getting off of them.

I have concern for a young person getting either the DS or RNY because of  deficiency problems that can arise if they are not careful.

My endochrinoligist was enthusiastic about my getting the band and opposed to RNY or DS.

I'm also lower on the BMI than some so that may be a factor.

Any of the proceedures will take care of the diabetes if you work the program.  Good for you in taking care of yourself.

One of the reasons I'm getting the DS is actually BECAUSE I am young. It is the procedure with the highest average amout of excess weight loss and the lowest average occurence of significant regain in the long term, and I have a lot of "long term" left!

And, as you said, problems can arise if they are not careful. Hopefully, people getting the DS (or ANY surgery) fully understand the post-op requirements, risks/possible issues, and the importance of proper follow-up.

I had the lap band and it made my diabetes worse. I lost a bit of weight, but not enough to cure me, and restriction was so variable that I'd turn to slider foods just to be able to eat somethiing and keep it down.

Slider foods include ice cream, cookies - usually not protein. None of them are good for diabetics.

In contrast I came out of the hospital after the DS cured of diabetes. I haven't taken medication since, and my HbA1C is below 4. The DS was worth it just for that, regardless of whether I lost weight or not.
