High Blood Sugars before Surgery
I posted in main fourm about high sugars. Forgot where it was. The NP called me yesterday and said her only problem with my blood was low b1. So I have to start that. Meanwhile I have to wait until thursday for my PCP to sign off cause he would not clear me yesterday with my High Sugar count (unreadable). How are you doing now with ya sugar?
Well now that I can speak from personal experience having just had surgery last Thursday, my blood sugars made no difference at all with regard to surgery. They had me on an insulin drip the entire time I was in the hospital anyway. I had my finger stuck pretty regularly but I didn't find that to be a big problem as they were in in and out of my room all the time especially the first 24 hours.
I came home from the hospital with orders to only take1/2 my diabetes meds which would be only 4 mg. of glimperide... and this morning I had the lowest morning number I've had in months!!! I am so happy that I can already see progress... I cried... I really did. I know this surgery is going to save my life.

Hi Laura
On the day of surgery my blood sugar was 230, and the nurse who tested it just said 'you're diabetic aren't you?'! I was tempted to be sarcastic and tell her 'well spotted' but I kept my mouth shut.
They didn't seem too concerned - I was put on sliding scale insulin and yes, the glucose drip (because I was nil by mouth for three days) and they tested me every hour, which is very tiresome in the middle of the night. I just left them to it, and they managed it.
I'd had my band out before the DS and freed of the restrictions had gone mad eating food I didn't think I'd be allowed after the op!
I have the last laugh now though - my PCP and diabetic nurse looked at my postop figures and were literally speechless - I tried not to say 'I told you so': there's been a lot of biting my tongue since the op, so you'll get your revenge!
