Hypoglycemia is driving me crazy
I am in a 6 month presurgical program at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. I'm just about to start month three. They advised me to start a weight reduction program, and I've lost about 15 pounds. I'm on five medications for diabetes. I've already reduced my morning insulin from 20 units to 5 units. I've reduced glimipride from 8 mgs a day to 4 mgs a day. Still in the morning after I exercise my glucose drops into the 70's and I feel like ........ . I don't want to increase my carbs too much in the morning, because I don't want to gain weight, but when my blood sugar gets low, I feel like I need to eat the entire refrigerator. I'm getting better at it, but it is terrible. Once I was close to passing out. My endochrinologist is wonderful, but I hate to keep bugging her with what to do next. I'm not scheduled to see her again until August, but I think I may need her to make some more adjustments in my meds. Thats a good thing and it means that I'm doing the right thing, but Lordy it sometimes feels terrible. Anyone else gone through the same thing?
I have type 1 diabetes, and I always had to adjust my insulin lowering it before excercising. Yes, the 5 units of insulin your taking in the am is now working better as you excercise, it makes it work better, in my opinion. Also losing weight, your meds should be lowered. I think you should talk to your endo before your appt in August. GOOD LUCK! Keep a journal of food/excerise/meds & dosage to help get the problem fixed. I had terrible hypoglycemia bouts over the years. Wendy 3/15/04 RNY -100 lbs
Thanks for your help! I'm doing a bit better. I reduced my evening dose from 25 units to 20 units of Humalog Mix. I did call the endo, but she's on vacation until next week. I can hold out. At the suggestion of the nutritionist at Lehigh Valley, I'm going to try some gatoraid while I exercise.

I thought I 'd give an update. I've lost two or three more pounds and that is already changing the meds that I need.
When I did speak to my endo, she eliminated my morning insulin and glimipride. That did the trick. I still am taking insulin and glimipride at dinner. (oh and three other meds that have not changed at all) In any case last night I had my first hypogylcemia in the evening, so now I guess I lower the dinner dose of insulin. This all makes me very happy, but I still can't get used to those low blood sugars. When I get into the 70s and below, I feel terrible and the effects last for hours after the blood sugar is normal again.
Thanks for the support from those who have cared!
