What should blood sugars run 4 weeks post-op w/no med?
I had my lap band surgery done on April 16th. When I started my 10 day sugar-free clear liquid diet, with 3 protein shakes a day, I was told to go off all of my diabetes medicine - I was on Lantus-30 units, and Avandament - 4/1000 2x a day. I am now almost 4 weeks post op, and my blood sugars are still running rather high. Usually 150-225 range. I did talk to my primary care doctor 1 week out of surgery, and he said not to worry about the #'s right now, as I am in a healing stage, and that always throws things off. I just started "mushy" foods today (yippee), and I don't know what that will do to my test results. Anyone else out there having similar results?
Type II Diabetic since 1998
I don't have an answer for you BJBlue, but I'm very interested in hearing what others have to say. I'm trying to scale down my food portions to reduce the amount of insulin I'm taking before my surgery date (don't have a date yet), and it's not easy! I take Levemir (100 units/day) plus Novolog (over 200 units a day). I'm excited to think that I can stop taking insulin after surgery, but it scares me to think that my blood sugar will run high without it. I'm Type II since 1996 and insulin dependent since 2002. Hang in there! I have a feeling your blood sugar level will normalize and you'll be happy you were sleeved. ---Alma Rene

It is my understanding that lap band does not reverse diabetes because it is only restrictive and has no malabsorptive component. My surgeon explained to me that to correct the diabetes, RNY is the surgery of choice because it bypasses the portion of the intestine where sugar/glucose is absorbed, thus lowering the blood sugar levels dramatically. With the lap band, you don't get this same effect.
Now, that being said, I have heard that even lap banders will show improvement in their diabetic control, it is just that RNY puts most diabetics into a form of remission.
Colleen, when you eat less, you require less insulin. As you lose weight, you become less insulin resistant. It stands to reason that if you use the Sleeve or the Lap Band as the tool it was meant to be, you may not need additional insulin once you reach your ideal weight and continue to eat small nutritious meals and exercise regularly. I know that the Sleeve and Lap Band are not the instant cures for diabetes that NY bypass is, but I'm optimistic that I can resolve my diabetes through proper diet and exercise using the Sleeve to help me accomplish this goal. Good luck to you!

Thank you all for your replies. I don't think I got notified of your posts before, but it showed up in my email today.., so I apologize for my delayed responses....
Since I posted the original post back on May 12th, I have gone on metformin - 500mg 2x daily.
That didn't do much, so about 3-1/2 weeks ago, went on avandament 500/2 2x daily.
Still does not seem to be doing much for my blood sugars. Yesterday I had my 3rd lap band fill - I am now at 7.4cc's in a 10cc band. Been on clear liquids since yesterday, and tomorrow will get to start adding food back in. I will finish out the week doing the 500/2 2x daily, but on Sunday, I will up it to 1000/4 avandament and see what I get. I really hoped that having the surgery would help improve my numbers, but with my bloodwork drawn last week, and visit to the dr yesterday, my a1c was 9.9.......
I will let you all know what happens....
Thank you again for you replies, and I again apologize for not seeing them before now....
