This is not a very popular forum so I'm sending this out to any current or past Type 1 Diabetics.  Add me as a friend.  Let's keep in touch and help each other on this journey. We shouldn't have to do it alone.

It has been a long time since I've come to the Diabetes Forum. I wanted to say hello to all my fellow Type 1'ers. I had open RNY over 4 yrs ago, lost 100 lbs, on 1/2 the amount of insulin thru my pump, and very happy.  If I can be of any help to anyone, please don't hesitate to ask away Wendy pre-op 278/170/190

Hi Wendy, My surgery was much more recent than yours.  And I had the lap band.  But I'm curious, 4 years out, how do you feel about the surgery and how has it benefited your type 1 diabetes? I haven't adjusted my basal at all.  I have decreased my insulin significantly just from eating fewer carbs.  I went from an average of 70 total units (basal and bolus) to an average of 31 units a day.  According to my endocrinologist, I was already a low dosing insulin user. I opted for the lap band for a couple of reasons.  I didn't have any weight related health issues yet.  I don't have any diabetes complications yet and I want to have children some day (if biology kicks in). Why did you choose RNY over your other options? Thanks in advance.

Hi Deb, I feel great 4 yrs out and only wished I had done it before having kids because I might have been able to have more. Being overweight and diabetic I had rough pregnancies and can't have any more. But I'm happy I got to have my two, healthy boys. My diabetes is so much better now because of it too. Pre-op I was pumping over 100 units a day, now I average 35-50 units a day, depending on the carbs. I wish I was allergic to carbs and my body couldn't process them....but thats not the case. The first year post op I hardly ate any carbs, psyched myself that I would get sick, and was on even less insulin.   I didn't have a choice between lapband and RNY because, at the time, insurance would only cover the gold standard in the industry. I'm happy with the malaborption aspect of it, and only worry about the future, as technology advances, but I can't complain, I lost 100 lbs, I haven't had any complications (knock on wood), and feel normal. And as long as I get yearly labs and all is well, so am I.  I have gotten complacent (sp) with not taking my protein drinks, like I did for the first 2 years religiously, as well as taking all the vits, calcium & b-12...so I need to get back on that wagon. I don't want the weight to creep up, as it does so many the longer post op you are....and this added 15 lbs scares me. I don't want to buy new clothes again. The first time around was great, this would not. Hope your feeling good, being only 6 weeks out, right? How often to you have to get filled? I really don't know alot about the lap band. Is the band tight to restrict food intake? Feel free to e-mail me privately if you like. Wendy morris119@ yahoo

HI... I'm a few months out, from RNY, and doing well.  I'm down 51 lbs.  I have had some insulin issues.  Onw night I was in the 40's for hours, and couldn't get it up with milk and graham crackers alone, so I had to do the ER thing and get some D50.  That sucked:(  I"m not on a pump, although I may start up again when my belly shrinks, and not rubbing on things all the time:)  I was on 110 of Lantus before, now I take 42 !  Mostly do to diet....but someone told me once that I was also insulin resistant, and I think that's changing with RNY.  I've talked to Wendy, and she's awesome!  I'm gonna add you as a friend too.  It's so hard ot find type 1's around.  Take care!
