Does Diabetes Ever Go Away
Hi I have been a Diabetic for about 10 years and it has been very controlled and my AIC' s have always been good. I am concerned that I may never get rid of the diabetes completely. Since surgery my numbers have been whacky anywhere from110-286 I was just wondering if for some diabetics it takes more weight loss for your diabetes to get better controlled? Thanks
Hi
I have been diabetic for 20 yrs and I thought having this surgery would make my sugar be under control with out meds, I have lost 65 lbs and I excercise 6 days a week. I was on Metformin 1000mg 2x a day, glyburide 2x a day and actos 40mg 1x and now I just take Januvia 100 mg 1x a day and my HGA1C befor surgery was 10.9 and now it is 7.0, I really thought it would go away like most people say that after surgery they aren't on any meds, I am off all my High BP meds which is great. I hardly eat any carbs, No white bread or an white flour. I think with time it will get better

I had been diabetic for 10 years also before I had my lap/ds. They gave me insulin the night of my surgery day and the next morning. Since that day , I take nothing for diabetes and my blood sugar is normal. To date I have lost 68 pounds and feel great and can eat anything I want.
There are a lot of factors involved, including how long you have had diabetes, and how well your diabetes was controlled at the time of surgery. My surgeon won't operate unless the HBA1C is 7 or below, for that reason. They say RNY/DS patients get better faster than others, but I chose to have a VSG. For me, it took about six weeks to get off insulin, and another six or eight to sort of get off metformin, which means I take it when I remember it - I think it is some kind of subconscious resistence. Anyway, I haven't taken it for several days now and my fasting BG was 124 this morning.
