pre-op blood sugar requirements

I am curious if there is a requirement for blood sugar levels before surgery. Do you have to get your A1c down to a certain level before they will do it?

My surgeon put me on a ten day liquid diet before surgery.  I drank some juice that I thought was diet, but turned out to be full of sugar.  I went up to 300 and they said they would cancel the surgery if I was above 150 on the morning of surgery.  I got rid of that juice and got back down in time for surgery.

I had the same question as you did.  I was wondering about what your A1C had to be because mine is a 9 right now.  So I am getting a little worried....

I haven't had my surgery yet either.  I'm still doing the nutritionist appts & haven't even had my psyc eval yet.  My A1C is now down from almost 9 to 7.8!  I am working so hard at getting these #s down.  When you find out, let us know.  I have my real important appts. on Valentines' Day!

I just went through my R.N. eval. & I was told that the B.M.I. # had to be 35 or higher & that the HA1C # had to be 8 or below.

my doctor wouldn't do surgery until my HGA1C was under 8. I started @ 10.9 and I said if it was normal I wouldn't need this surgery, so I took a lot of medicine and watched what I ate and it took from Feb to June to go down to 7.8 pre-op and now it is 7.0 Susan

Richard Bernstein MD has a book out called "the Diabetes Solution"  Do the diet and the BG comes down ton to normal (for me) quick, like 3 days or less.    That is a great book by the way.  For type I and type II.  He is type I.  You can get a lot of the book for free on his web site.  Might be able to get a deal on Amazon.  I love it. But I am still going out for the Duodenal Switch.
