Newly Diagnosed Type 2

I've had gestational diabetes (insulin dependent) during all three of my pregnancies, and just found out at my post-partum visit that I'm now officially type 2 diabetic.  This so sucks! :(  I took glyburide during my last pregnancy, but my OB thinks that metformin may be better for me.  I am so hoping that once I get my Band tightened again (and if it works!), I can get off meds altogether.  If not, I was planning on a VSG revision... but now with the Type 2, I may look at an RNY or DS.  This sucks! :(

Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin.  I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby.  5 years out from revision to VSG.  Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(

So sorry about the news, Sami. The good news is that if you get your band tightened and lose weight (or get a revision - and VSG would still be a viable choice), you have a really good chance of getting rid of resolving the diabetes. The less time you have had diabetes, the greater your chances of getting rid of it after weight loss/WLS. In the meantime, no matter what medicine you are on (and metformin is safe, effective and proven), controlling carb intake will do more for controlling your blood sugar than anything else. Many type-2's with relatively mild diabetes can normalize their blood sugars simply by cutting out *all* simple carbs (soft bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar) and getting your carbs mainly from vegetables, without medication.

But, in short, yeah, you are right. Diabetes sucks bigtime.

If you have not started on a drug yet see if your dr will put you on Byetta, its a fairly new drug (2 yrs plus). The major downside for many people is that it is a twice a day injectable. Drug side effect is weight loss WHOOOO HOOOO! I actually lost 45 lbs in about 4 mos when it first came out, then it stopped working so well for me, and I had to go back on actos, and of course found 25 of those pounds! http://byetta.com/index.jsp Laurie

Metformin works well adn won't make you gain weight like Avandia or Actos. But if you can drop some weight, increase your excersise and whatch what you eat you might be able to do it without the meds. Good luck!

I am also a new type 2 diabetic. I have been on metformin for a month now and I have started Byetta this week. I hope that I will eventually keep it under control with out progessing on to becoming insuline dependant.

Lasty night I attended a meeting for a bariatric surgeon and he talked about how the RNY  would be a cure for diabetes.
