Sharon I wish you all the luck in the world.  I know I was told if I didnt' do this I wasn't going to live.  I did this for my health.  The weight loss is just secondary.  We are all in this together.  I too had high BP, High cholesteral. and severe sleep apnea.  Feeling healthy for the first time in a long time feels SOOOOOO good.  I hope this helps you and makes you feel as good as I do.  Think positive!!  This will work for you.

Thank you, Teena!  I'm thinking that if I think any more positive than I already do, my co-workers & support people will think I'm crazy!!!  It's funny...now that I'm going through this, they all want to come to me for nutrition advice.  The first thing I do is refer them to their own nutritionist!!  You have to have a base on which to work!  They don't want to go through weight loss surgery, but they all have their New Year's resolutions to uphold.  A lot of people really don't have a clue about nutrition.  That's sad, but having had diabetes for so many years, I consider myself quite knowledgeable about dieting.  I just was caring so much about others before that I put myself on the back burner.  That's why in October of last year, I started my journey.  My thoughts are like yours in that I just want to be better able to control my blood sugars and to be healthy.  If I lose the weight too, fantastic!   Thanks for being here for me! Hi Sharon - I'm in your club! I'm a Type 1 diabetic - had it for 35 years (onset at age 6). And I am working on getting the gastric bypass surgery. I have received approval from the surgeon. She said that since I only had the co-morbs of high bp and high cholesterol, no circulatory issues, ond good HGA1C (6.2 last reading) that there isn't any reason that I as a diabetic couldn't go through with the surgery. As far as treating low bs, she did say prevention was the best medicine, but we know that's now always possible. My endocronologist said I could try the applesauce route, glucose tabs, he even suggested using the glucagon injection kit, but rather than using the entire thing, only take a small dose (which is what I do on sick days). Hope all goes well on your journey!

Dear Diana, I got my evaluation today...my psyc went well, but there was one teeny, tiny "problem":  I have lost enough weight on my own (almost 20 lbs.) to be down to the minimum BMI of 35.  So, by the time I go through the daily living classes & have my endocrinologist appt, I may no longer qualify.  That's ok too.  My only concern...my main concern is keeping focused & continuing to lose weight on my own without re-gaining.  I've been losing slowly, so as they say, that's the best way.  I'll still need encouragement from friends & family so that I won't feel like I'm doing this alone.  I can't tell you how helpful these blogs have been for me!!  The other answer to my question was if there was a BG requirement.  Yes, it's HA1C of 8 or less.  Mine is still high at 7.8, but it does qualify.  I know with all of this dieting & careful monitoring of my BGs, my #s will be dropping soon.  As you know, it's hard work!  I just noticed today that I am having at least 1 low BG almost every day now, but the weirdest part is that they happen at different times!!  Can't really do much without a pattern.  So, treating lows is something I'm working hard at.   Good luck with your by-pass!
