Hi  I had WLS to get off my meds metformin 1000mg 2x a day glyburide 10mg 2x and actos 30 mg, immediately after surgery my BS were great when I started on full liqs they started to climb again.Well I was really upset I have not had any sugar and hardly any carbs you can't have sugar after WLS so why the increase BS so after 8 weeks I gave in and went to the Endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes but not WLS they put me back on metformin which I had to start on the liq (tastes like poison) but now I can take the pill I started out at 250mg 2x then 500mg 2x and now I am up to 500mg 3x a day and my BS are perfect I have lost 45 lbs since surgery I just thought that after WLS and loosing 45 lbs I would be off all meds my BP meds are down which is good. I have been on metformin for about 15yrs and when I  first started taking it again it gave me the runs but I started out with a low dose and increased it and I am fine now. I had RNY on 6/18/07 Susan

I've been on Metformin for along time.  I think it's one of the better oral diabetes drugs out there.  It doesn't make you gain weight and it's a generic so it won't break the bank either. Some of the side effects you might encounter are nausea, loose stools, loss of appetite (hey but that's good right :-)) You might also experience low blood sugars so it's important to check your blood sugar often.
Regards and hugs,
