I wasn't sure if this was posted before as I have not read all of the messages, but I decided to post it just in case. The makers of Avandia and Actos have been "BLACK BOXED".  I personally had been on Avandia for the last 6 yrs and before that was on Actos for 2. Now I am on neither one as I brought this up to my doctor and he said ,"better to be safe than sorry"... There are a couple of issues surrounding these drugs and one can find them on the link within the link below. Check it out! http://heartdisease.about.com/

Hi, I never thought to come to this forum before, but glad I found it.  After my diabetes being gone for almost 2 years after RNY, it has resurfaced again due I think, in part, to my 30 pound weight gain over the last 6 months. So the doc put me on Actos (knowing that Avandia was not good at this time). So I read about Actos not being good either and I tell my PCP. What does he say? "Don't believe everything you read on the internet".  He doesn't seem to like the internet well so he is keeping me on Actos.  Now I do not have heart problems, but still. My surgeon's PA recommended Byetta, a subQ injection she said is better than Actos. But he wouldn't hear of it and is instead recommending I see a diabetes specialist.  So in mid July I will. In the meantime, I am to stay on Actos 45 mg. every day.

To the original post and to Karen. It is true that there are black box warning on both Avandia and Actos. The problem with Actos comes from swelling which can lead to congestive heart failure. I've been on it for years and have never had swelling. I think it is safe for me. If you have any kind of swelling with it, by all means stop taking it, but if you have taken it for years with no problems then you might want to consider staying on it. There are no other meds right now that are as effective for insulin resistance that Actos and Avandia. Actos has kept my A1c at 5.1 and under for years now. I don't want to mess that up now.
