Hello everyone, My name is Nicki and I am so happy to have found this message board.  My very good friend had WLS about 6 months ago and she lead me to this site.  I am 35 (next month) I  am 5'7 and weigh 280lbs.  I have type 1 diabetes.  The diabetes is the scariest part for me in deciding on the surgery.  I am frightened at the thought of the highs and lows and adjusting my pump to accomodate.  So, I am going to spend the next few hours, days....reading through all the posts before I ask something that has been asked 1000 times.  Thank you all for being here and posting your stories.........................it really means so much to so many. Welcome Nicky! Just wanted to say, I started out at 35 yrs old,  5'7 & 280 lbs, & on an insulin pump (being Type 1) so we have a lot in common! I can't say what surgery is best for you, but I had open gastric bypass March 04, still down 90-100 lbs and feel great!  My insulin requirements decreased significantly post op, and now I can say I average about 40 units of Humalog a day which is more than half the amt of insulin pre-op. I was using close to 150 units a day, so my endo is happy, and my latest AIC was 6.3.  As far as low sugars, I use glucose tabs.   If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail privately....I rarely get a chance to go OH. Good luck with your decisions, Wendy

I am curious now that you are a couple years post op, how has WLS affected your type 1 diabetes and pump use? This question is open to any Type 1 diabetics, post op, pum*****n pump users. Thanks.

Hi Deb, I am 8 months post op now.  I was 291 when I went in for surgery on 7/31/07.  I have lost 90 pounds, I am off a couple meds and I have cut my insulin use in half.  I will always have diabetes because I am type 1 however, I need much less insulin now.  I still use my pump, lately I have been having a lot of low readings so we are working on that.  If you have any other questions let me know.
