Blood Sugar Spikes
Hello there,
I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and have been having trouble with my blood sugar spiking within an hour after eating. (Sometimes around 200.) Then, it goes back down to the normal range within two hours. I did not previously have diabetes and my OB has not yet diagnosed me with gestational diabetes, but she is concerned.
Earlier today I spoke with the nurse at the office where I had my GBP four years ago. She said she has heard of some patients having this problem and suggested I stay away from foods with high sugar content. Well, I generally do not eat anything that has more than 10g of sugar per serving. I'm seeing this spike with a variety of foods.
Has anyone out there experienced this? How did you and you doctor handle this?
Thanks so much in advance for your reply!

Hello there! And hello to your new baby who's now already a year old???
I don't know if you're still interested in a reply, but I have been dieting since mid-October 2007 to try to lose as much as I can before surgery. I have switched to high fiber foods, containing at least 3g of fiber). I also am a little crazy, since I decided to eat oatmeal w/ 2T of raisins every morning (even on weekends). I needed some type of constant in my meal plan. What I've noticed is that I do have a spike in my blood sugar after eating, but by lunchtime, I'm back to normal. It sounds kinda like what was going on with you.
Possible solution? I'm going to be speaking with my nutritionist to find out if adding 1 oz. of protein to my breakfast will delay the spike. I think her answer will be, "Try it to see if it works." In the above scenario, I forgot to mention that my blood sugar levels pre-meal are on target. They go over 200 within 2 hrs. or so, but then come back down to normal within approx. 5 hrs. I've also always had slow digestion.
Anyway, I didn't know if you were still seeking responses, but here's my 2 cents.
