One year follow up
I had my one-year follow up about three weeks ago. The surgeon was very happy with my progress. I guess I am. I have lost 85 pounds. I'd like to lose more, but I've been pretty stable for a couple of months now. I am also having problems controlling my blood glucose. I met with the dietician today and I'm supposed to limit my lunch to two carbs. I don't really have a problem except for at lunch. It's very strange. I have new pictures on my profile if you'd like to see how I look now. New haircut, too!

I am 5 months post op and have lost 64 lbs with about 25 more to go! My blood sugars were not in control post op. I was taking 4 meds pre-op and now I'm on 3...my blood sugars are finally in control but I really want to stop taking meds. My doctors are stumped! With lower calories, virtually no carbs, why is my pancreas so resistant?
It's *only* a tool...that's what I keep getting reminded of. I'm a type 1 and mine won't work even with a jump start. I've recently seen experiments for ppl with type 1 and stem cell transplantation. It eliminates the need for insulin and meds for up to 18 months. Where was this when *I* woulda signed up for it??? :) It's a blessing you've lost so much and have reduced your meds!!!
Keep up the great work!!

My reply is quite tardy. I am also diabetic and had a horrible A1C prior to surgery. At fifteen months, I am on insulin with tight control and a normal A1c. It didn't "turn the corner" until ten or twelve months post op. Prior to RNY, I was 11.3 with fasting glucose over 250, while taking four meds. Now, my A1c is 6.2, fasting glucose is less than 100 and I take about one third of the insulin as pre surgery and no other meds. I didn't harm my body quickly and it didn't heal quickly either! Hang tough. I am thrilled with my new nad improved health.
I may always need insulin, but now the difference is the medication can do its job.
