NEED ADVICE- My Diabetes is Returning

I am about 14 months out and had this surgery (R-N-Y) not only to lose weight but to resolve uncontrollable high blood sugars of about 3 years duration.  I had been in clinical trials for new diabetic drugs including Byetta before it was approved, and nothing would bring ny sugars down.  I went on a 30-hour-fast as a test and my sugars did not fall below 200. After the surgery, my meds were cut from 7 to two and I was able to leave behind the ones bringsing the worst side effect with them.  About 4 months I hit a weight plateau and my sugars started to go back up. My diet structure did not change substantially and I even cut back when I reached the plateau. Glucose values had been 130-150 consistently, but now bounce between 130-210. Diet alterations and increased excercise have had almost no effect.  My weight is stabalized, but I still need to lose about another 30 pounds.  HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE? If so, please let me know if you found a way to jump-start the weight loss, what your surgeon had to say about the reversal, and what success you had at reducing the sugar values. Any information concerning your similar experience would be appreciated!

I see you asked your questions in Jan, 07, but I am here for the first time. My diabetes has also returned and after being off all diabetes meds, I am now on Actos again for almost a month.  I told my PCP about the write up about the Actos being no good along with the Avandia. He told me not to believe everything I read online.  I told him my surgeon's office said to switch me to Byetta, but he wouldn't do it.  I am to see a "diabetes specialist" on July 19th and hopefully things will be corrected. My sugars run from 150 to 200 or maybe more depending on what/when I eat.

Karen:  You and I are traveling the same road.  I've been fighting the diabetes thing for years. I think they are finding out that those of us who had our diabetes "cured" initially after surgery did so by the changes in these intestinal engymes and they are finding out that the effect does NOT last.  I personaly am very suspicious of both Actos and Avandia and I just stopped my Avandia.  The only med for diabetes I want to be taking is Mertaformin (Glucophague) which has been on the market for decades and is considered the safest.  The best advice I can give you, and which is working for me, is to follow the old advice: lose more weight or keep your weight stable , EXERCISE EVERY DAY (30 minute minimum - I have a treadmill), and limit intake of carbs.  My sugars without this run 150-200+ and with it religiously, drop to a pretty stable 120-130.  A diabetes specialist is a GREAT idea and mine has been my mentor and support.  I wish you luck and good results!
