So now that we have made it past the 2 year mark, Is anyone gaining weight? I HAVE ! I started at 205 the day of surgery, and got down to a size 8 at 123! Stil short of my goal but I was happy with the loss! My MD's have played all around with my meds.... first off all but my heart meds, and insulin, and then have slowly added them ALL back and then some. Since adding an insulin pump, my blood glucose levels have been great, but I nearly went blind because of the drastic improvement of the BG Levels. Now that has leveld out with only 60 % loss in one eye. I have been using fit day and my daily average calories run between, 775 to 1,050. with moderate activity. YES I exersize and eat the right sort of foods, and still follow the rules for GBY. It seems that the meds are once again adding on the pounds........ I am now back up to 150! and a size 14. I spoke to my MD's when I had went from 123 to 135,( all new as I have moved) and they think I am just being overly anxious about all of this! Going ahead with the GBY was not an easy choice for me. I fought my MD on this for two years before I attended my first pre-op group and then waited another full year (my choice) to make sure this was for me. Now I feel defeated and wonder how long it will be before 150 goes to 157, 162,172, 179, 182, 190,194,195, 200! AND THEN WHAT! MY BMI had been NORMAL and is now one the edge of OBESE again! I have an appointment with a dietician/diabetic RN in a week or so but I am not sure what she will be able to do to help. Is everyone doing OK? are you at goal? Lisa

I am 5 weeks post op and a type 1 on an insulin pump. Even though my daily insulin amount is now around 11 - 15 units my weight loss has been a little slow. I was told that this might be by others on this board who are insulin dependent. I take 1000 mcg of chromium picolinate daily and this has also helped reduce my insulin requirements. I hope I am able to reach my goal of losing a total of 120 lbs! Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth, I too was a very slow looser, about a pound every 2.5 weeks.  I'd go to the support group meetings and listen as other proudly announced they had lost 30 , 40 and even 50, while I was only at 15 or 20! It was very frustrating but by the end of the first year I was very close to my goal, (115) I was told because I had less than 100 ppounds to loose and that because I was small to begin with the weight loss would be slower. I went from over 250 units of insulin (lantas and Humalog) a day to just about 15 a day on the pump.  Whne I first STOPPED loosing weight, the MD I had at that time was going to have me start on SYMLIN, but because of the intake limits I now have it was not safe!  I have ALWAYS been very sensitive to the weight gain affects of many medications!

Hopefully when I see the diabetic Nutritionist next week she can help me.

PLease keep in close contact with your MD's and esp your EYE MD,

Have faith, you can do it!

LISA

Hi Lisa, I tried Symlin about a year ago and I hated it!  It burned at the injection site and two hours later my bg would spike.  I am now taking about 15 units of humalog a day in my pump.  I saw the eye doctor not too long ago and my vision is fine.  Did you ask your doctor(s) why they wanted you back on all those meds?

This is scary! I'm just starting the program and when asked my PC and surgeon about this, they basically said some gain is normal about 2 yrs. post-op, but not to worry about it. ACK!  Now I'm wondering if this is the right thing to do? Why put myself through this if I'm only going to gain it back again....this is the end of the weight loss line, so if THIS doesn't work, then what??  My pc said that should this happen, by that time I should be able to take weight loss meds. (hello?? I don't think that's really what I want to hear!) Please let us know what your docs say! Marie

Hi Maria, I hope your MD has a great pre-op group for you to attend and that you have the oppertunity to talk about htis concern there. AS well as meetings withg a psychologist. I all so had the same feelings.  And The pre-op meeting I attended ( mandatory with my DOC) as well as the mandatory Psych appointments (5 in all) really helped.  I am not sure the weight gain is NORMAL or to be expected unless you over eat, or are :" grazing" all day.  The folks in the post op group that did gain weight also talked about which was the BEST ICE CREM to eat! Or how they drank two or three drinks a night!  Both which are not good and can defeat the surgery. You are lucky in that your MD's are willing to consoder giving you meds to help. My MD won;t even think of that! NO WAY! Please continue with the program your MD has set up .......attend the meeting, ask questions and when YOU are ready make a choice you can live with.  Take care Lisa PS: I am not sorry I did this,  I am just frusstrated with this stage of the process,

I'm still VERY pre-op.... no date yet.... but talking about gaining weight while being on insulin.... count me in!!!!! I was like 50 pounds lighter without being on the insulin. I was told by my diabetes educator that insulin does indeed cause weight gain. I exercise, I eat right, yet I still gain weight. It's very disturbing to me. I'm also having to "shoot up" 50 units of insulin per meal. I have even asked my diabetes educator what we can do next to get my blood sugars down. My numbers run anywhere between 14 mmol/L to 32 mmol/L (yes, that's the highest I've ever seen them... scary isn't it?). Oops... I guess we weren't talking about blood sugar numbers..... *blushes* Lori Type 1
