Hello everyone, I was wondering, did your surgeon require that your a1c be stable before surgery? Does a higher level indicate a greater chance for infection? Thanks for any advice! Jennifer

I had RNY specifically to control my diabetes. I did not have to have a stable A1C preop. I've read here that some docs require an A1C not above a certain value, like 7.0 (but the value can vary from doc to doc). Gee, if mine had been 7, I wouldn't have needed surgery! My A1C was around 9 before lap RNY. I healed quickly. I didn't have any problem with infection because I was on IV antibiotics postop while in the hospital. By the way, at 3 months out my A1C was 5.5, 5.2 at 6 months, and 4.2 at 9 months! And my insulin dose has decreased 95%. Hope you can arrange to have your surgery soon. Good luck. Kathy
