Anyone develope Diabetes AFTER wls??
I had wls in May 05, lost all my weight but am having health issues. I get very sick after eatting. About 20 mins or so after I get clamy, weak and very shaky. Others have suggested that this could be a drop in blood sugar. I have always had low everything - blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. I also have episodes where I wont have just eatten but i'll get very shaky and dizzy.
I haven't gotten in to see my pcp yet. I don't have a very supportive wls so I can't go there. What kind of test should I get run to see what's going on??? My pcp is willing to do whatever I need, but he doesn't know anything about wls. Even with my labs, I had to research myself to find out which ones to have done and now he orders them for me.

Hi Laurie,
Are you diabetic? From your symptoms, it does sound like hypoglecemia. I've heard alot of post ops lately suffering these low blood sugar episodes after eating carbs. I remember getting an article on gastric bypss & hypoglecemia being related to these kind of symtoms of dizziness, shakey, etc. If you go to google try a search by typing in gastric bypass/hypoglecemia. I know there is a New England Medical Journal article.
In the meantime, you were looking for a list of labs that should be done for gastric bypass patients? Here is the list that my support group leader did for us to take to the PCP, it has all the codes, and they can decide which ones are right for you and your needs.
-This list includes labs suggested regularly for gastric bypass patients-
Regularly (every 3-6 months depending on your previous results)
Keep track of any levels that are declining from one set of tests to the next, even if not yet in the low range. Make any corrections necessary in
your diet and vitamin regimen before the levels get too low.

Hi Laurie
I have type 2 diabetes going into this surgery to help my diabetes. I don't take insulin any longer but now I suffer from very low blood sugar at least once or twice per day and I try not to eat carbs. My pouch feels empty quite often as well. I stopped losing weight a couple of months ago and I am no where near my target. I did have an upper GI last friday and the radiologist said it seemed as though my food from my pouch is emptying into my small intestine too quickly. The doctor is doing a procedure next month (endoscopy with a scolora), not sure I spelled that right. This procedure puts scar tissue around the pouch for possibly food to stay in longer, but not sure. I am hoping this helps my low blood sugar and the food stays there longer.
I have also heard of this issue happening to many other people that are not diabetics as well. Maybe you can suggest an upper GI to be performed to find out a cause. I hope this helps.

I wish I had details but ......
When My MD ( not the WLS MD) found out I had gastric BY Pass he was very upset. ( he is a specialist in Diabeties) He said that in the past 6 years he has seen more and more folks developing some form of diabeties since WLS. Because this was my first appoint, ment with him I had many other issues to talk to hm about so I could not ask many questions about this. I do know that he is working on a paper to be published in the next year or so, on this topic.
It wil be interesting to see just what his findings are.
(note: I moved twice since my syrgery and this is a whole new team for me... This Diabetis MD said he would have never cleared me for surgery if I had been his patient. HE fully supports WLS for other patients, but not just for controling Diabeties)

just today i was diagnosed with diabetes. i'm 3 years out, initially i'd lost 160lbs, but gained back 20. to be fair, everyone was saying i was too thin and drawn looking, so i wasnt being as careful as i should have been i guess. anyway, how on earth to i manage a diabetic diet with a wls diet? i have no idea where to start. my doc only said to eat 'mixed meals', meaning carbs, protein, and fats. eat 4 meals and one snack a day, and lose 17 lbs. he says in 4 months i will no longer be diabetic if i do this. oh yes, and exercise 20 min a day. i'm also recovering from bilateral total knee replacements, so the exercise part is quite painful. he's referred me to a dietician, but it'll be a good month before i can get in. i'm so confused
