I am a type II insulin dependent for 15 years diabetic whose blood sugars are all over the place also. I was so hopeful that with the gastric by pass I would eliminate my diabetes [you know the 85% that are cured] I am scheduled for RNY on 10-24. Since coming to this site I have learned so much and have come to accept the fact that I probably won't get off insulin, but hopefully I will also be more in control and not keep gaining gaining gaining no matter how hard I try to diet. I also need knee surgery.hopefully a weight loss will allow that. It is nice to find others that are going through this. I sure appreciate all your sharing. I must admit I am nervous about during surgery, as I am sure my sugar will go sky high as every time I am sick it climbs so high even if I am not eating. Does anyone else have this happen. I would love to hear from some of you post-ops and your experience with your diabetes and anything I can look out for. Thanks so much Marti

Hi Marti, Welcome, congrats on your upcoming WLS.....it'll be here before you know it, and you'll be on your way to a healthy life!! Like you, my sugars have always been all over the place, gained over 100 lbs being insulin dependant, and my numbers would always go high when I was stressed out or sick. Always a rollercoaster. I have to say, my numbers, being 2 1/2 yrs post op, still tend to fluate, however, my insulin requirements are more than half of what they use to be, and I got that 100 lbs off. Don't worry about your blood sugar going high or low in the hospital, the staff will help you out, and you can always have your glucose meter. If I can help answer any questions, please feel free to ask away!! Take care, Wendy

Wendy, thanks so much for your kind encouragement. I know that I obsess a little more than normal. I used to be a nurse [left it over 25 years ago to become a Realtor] However, I think I still have that "science" gene working overtime right now. I was just reading a paper on "Systemic insulin resistance" and they said basically they don't know which came first "the chicken or the egg," i.e. the excess weight or the insulin resistance. I always thought I was overweight, but when I look back, I was 145 pounds and 5'8" tall at 22 when I got married, but started to gain with my first baby at 26 and it was all downhill from then on. I was diagnosed as a type 2 at 49 and have been on insulin ever since.I do know that when I get to the other side like you are, I will make sure that I never let that weight start to creep up. I am not optimistic about getting off insulin after learning so much on this site, but I want to be like you and Kathy K who have lost so much and are doing well. WheneverI figure out how to get into my profile again, I will update it. Thanks again, Marti
