Hi all,
I am 2.5 yrs out from open RNY. I have lost 116 pounds and am 4 from goal. I have recently been diagnosed with Type II and am taking 2000mg metafromin a day. My A1C1 has never been abnormal, but I've had fasting sugars of 134 and 2 hr as high as 180. I saw a dietician who supposedly worked with WLS patients. She told me I should eat 1600 cals a day with 180 gms of carbs! I almost laughed! My WLS doc told me not to do that and come see him on Tuesday. The one day I did try to eat more complex carbs, I had 2 episodes of hypoglycemia and a 2 hr of 180! All in the same day. Obviously, that won't work for me. The last 2 days, I've gone back to all protein and very small amount of carbs and my BS has been stable at 98-104 for both fasting and 2 hr.
I shutter to think how high my BS would be if I hadn't had WLS. My PCP said I would no doubt be insulin dependent by now. He also doesn't want to officially change my diagnosis from insulin resistant to diabetic. I'm not sure that's in my best interest as far as access to health care. Any opinions?
Thanks
Lyn

Hi Lyn
I just wanted to welcome you and say congratulations on your successful WL journey, you should be very, very proud of yourself to get within 4 lbs of goal, WOW, keep doing what your doing. I don't have any answers regarding the your diagnosisi and I agree with you that your should see your gastric bypass surgeon about the dietician's advice on carbs. I went to a nutritionist who specializes in diabetics and she told me no more than 25-30 carbs per meal. I found a good balance of insulin/carb ratio so its working for me. I have also found that whenever I eat carbs to throw some protein in the mix to balance out the blood sugars. I hope that will help with your blood sugars.
Good luck, and congratulations again!!
Take care,
Wendy
