My hubby had WLS on March 23, 2006 and is diabetic. He wasn't on the insulin shots, just pills. His doc took him off all med's gradually. He is about 25 pounds away from goal and his blood sugar is again running high. Anyone else have this problem? We were told that Vanderbilt has a 100% sucess rate with patients no longer needing pills after the WLS. He sure was hopeful that he would be off the med's. Is it possible that maybe doc just took him off too soon? I welcome your thoughts and experiences. Thanks!

I am still on insulin but off all oral meds and way way done on the amount of insulin. I would say to watch the amound ot carbs that he is eating. I know when I have carbs my blood sugar goes up. I try and stay under 50grams of carbs a day and that has been working for me. I even found a low carb milk to use with my protein shakes Regards, Ronna

Hi Donna, How often is your husband test? Is he running high at any particular time of the day or mostly after meals? It can also depend on how long he has been a diabetic as with some people the pancrease can "burn out" after over producing insulin for so long. He should probably see an endocrinologist and request a C-peptide test to check how much insulin he is producing. Elizabeth
