I was recently dianosed pre-diabetes. Daily tests in morning high but A1c normal. Anyway, my first question is this: my right hand is experiencing some slight tingling or getting kinda numb occassionally, usually when at rest. Is this related to the pre-diabetes? My second question is this: at what point will I become diagnosed diabetes 2 instead of pre-diabetic? Thank you!

I am not a doctor I can only comment on my own experiences. The tingling in your hand you need to talk to your doctor about. I had the same problem only with my foot. It could be directly related to being overweight. I have always been told that you either are diabetic or you are not. If your fasting blood sugar is high in the morning but your A1c is normal, I would say that you are not diabetic. I would take a look at your eating habits toward bedtime. Don't eat a big meal at dinner time and try to eat before 6:00 pm or 4 hours before you go to sleep. If this doesn't lower the numbers, I would add a small snack about 2 hours before bedtime. But again ask your doctor or visit a dietician. The A1c blood test is pretty accruate. It takes an average for about the last 3 months, when this gets over 7.0 then you should worry. If you are worried I would certainly see the nutritionist to go over a diabetic diet for you. You must read "Atkins for Diabetics" it explains a lot about the disease. Best wishes, Tammy

I've had diabetes Type II for 5 years now. A couple of years ago I started having tingling in some fingers and numbness in my little finger. My PCP had me do the electrical test for carpal tunnel. Yup, that's what it was. We're hoping after WLS that the worst of the symptoms might go away. It is the pressure on the carpal nerve that causes the tingling and numbness. If it doesn't then I will have to have surgery on it. So first things first. I'm going to have the WLS then see if I still need to have my wrists fixed. I would ask my dr about it. They will be able to rule things out.

Sometimes high blood sugar levels can cause nerve damage which causes the numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, which is called neuropathy. I would let the doc know about this, so he or she can keep an eye on things. As to the question about when you will be diagnosed with Diabetes- Let's hope never. If you can keep things under control with diet and exercise, you may never actually develope Diabetes. If you lose excess weight, you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming Diabetic. Getting a pre- Diabetes diagnosis is truly a blessing. It gives you a chance to get a handle on things. I had no warning before Diabetes made me very sick. I wish I had know when I still had a chance to possibly avoid it. Please take this time to get your diet in good control and exercise if you can. It could help a whole lot. Take gentle care.

I agree with Shelly, you are lucky that you are in the pre-diabetes stage. With proper diet and exercise you most likely will never be diabetic. Ann
