Hi, My name is Elizabeth and I am a type 1 diabetic who is considering the RNY WLS. I am looking for other type 1s who could give me advise as I go through the process of having the surgery and after. I wear an insulin pump and I am hoping I can where it during the surgery and what to expect.

Hi Elizabeth, How are you doing? We've chatted thru e-mail, and if you have any questions I can help with, please feel free to contact me......good luck with your consult next month. I also wear an insulin pump, and wasn't allowed to wear it during my hospital stay, but maybe every surgeon and endo are different. My sugars were okay and adjusted accordingly. Take care, Wendy 278/189/150 Type 1

Hi Elizabeth, I am a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump and will be having the Lap Band surgery on August 1st. I will let you know how it goes and I already know I will not be wearing my pump during surgery. I had my gallbladder out in March and didn't wear it then either and it worked out just fine. I know I am not much help but wanted to say hi and let you know us type 1's have to stick together because there are not many of us out there having surgery (at least that I am aware of!). Feel free to email me at any time! Nancy K

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the info on wearing a pump for surgery. It seems that the consensus is that the pump comes off for surgeries. I hope to have the RNY. The surgeon is nice and seems very knowledgeabe except when it comes to type 1 diabetes. He doesn't believe anyone can be type 1 and obese at the same time. I will have my endo talk with him. Elizabeth
