My first time to this forum. I was curious. I have not had any symptoms of diabetes since surgery. However, I do consider myself a diabetic who is diet controlled. I would not be surprised if as I continue to age my symptoms return. I am grateful for every day I am symptom free as it limits the wear and tear the disease causes on the body. I was wondering if others have experienced this. Laurie

Hi Laurie, I currently control my type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise. I was dx about a year ago. I heard too that diabetes is progressive and that someday I may need insulin, but I am hoping to avoid it as long as possible. I was wondering, how long have you had diabetes? Do you have any complications such as tingling feet etc? Thanks! Ann

Hi David, I agree, this board isn't very active, and I know there has to be alot of diabetics in the WLS community, but I'm pretty sure its not because everyone is at goal.....LOL! Did you have your consult with the Langhorne group? Are you having Lapband or RNY? Being neighbors....if I can help in any way, just email. Laurie, I had my open RNY about a month prior to you, congratulations on all your success. I'm a Type 1 diabetic, and although I'll always need insulin, my requirements, at 2 yrs PO, are averaging half of the insulin I was pre-op. I do agree, as time goes on, the symptoms of diabetes would increase with being able to eat more, however, being much healthier now with the weight loss, can only be a bonus, right? It gets much tougher now with those emotional food issues. For me, the first year was a great way to learn healthy eating, and the pounds just melted off, but this second year, gaining some weight back, its more of a mind game and process of learning how to use the tool that was given, and to go back to basics......protein, water and exercise. Hope everyone is doing well and has a Happy Memorial Day weekend!! Wendy

Hi Wendy, Congrats to you too. I would never have a regret for the choice to have surgery. The quality of my life is wonderful today. I will gladly resume meds if I need to do it. Just trying to keep the symptoms away or under control is adding bonus years to our lives. My program is not perfect but it works for me. Checking in on OH helps me to stay in tune and reminds me to use my tool. laurie
