Topic: RE: Adhesions & Hysterectomy after RNY
I have had three surgeries post RNY that involved cutting out adhesions.  I noticed on another post you mentioned you had spasms also.  Can you believe my first surgeon told me that adhesions didn't cause pain?  I thought I misunderstood him, so I took my mom to my next appointment.  I was told for years that my adhesions were the cause of my spasms, it ended up being only part of the problem.

I had constant abdominal pain after my original RNY.  About one year post op I had surgery to repair a  hernia and cut out adhesions.  My doctor did knick my bowel causing a leak.  So I had surgery the next morning to repair the leak and they cut out even more adhesions.  But I also had a leak after my RNY.  There is always that small chance.  But the chances that it happens twice are very small and by two different highly qualified surgeons are even smaller, I say it's just my body.

After the surgery to remove adhesions I was pain free for about six months before more complications returned.  My adhesions would cause my bowel to kink causing numerous partial bowel obstructions.  My last surgery was in August.  They went in to remove a blind loop of bowel and cut out numerous adhesions.  This time they removed a lot more adhesions than the first two times.  There is a chance of course that they might grow back, but there's always that chance that they might not or might not be so bad depending on their location!

I wish you the best of luck!

Ask your GB surgeon about ADHESIONS....when you have surgery, scar tissue (adhesions) can form.  For RNY, the adhesions (scar tissue) can form over the intestines causing them to lose the ability to float freely in the abdominal cavity the way they were designed to.  When food passes through the intestines you get a pulling, cramping sensation that cause pain that can range from mild to OMG!!! tears.  I have had to pull over on the highway and try to walk the pain off or wait until it passes.  The only cure for adhesions is more surgery to remove them.  Adhesions are illusive on test such as x-rays, CT scan and MRI, all of which I was given to determine the cause of this pulling, spasm, rolling, unbelievable pain.  The pain, for me, ranges from mild discomfort to tears and unable to speak pain.  Have your doctor check you and see if the cause of the cramps could be adhesions.  The way that my Adhesions were verified were by a doctor actually looking inside and seeing the scar tissue.  I wish you all the best and a speedy to end to your discomfort!!!

Topic: RE: Intestinal Spasms! Help pls
I just happened across your post today 10-24-10.  I know that it has been several months since your original post.  I just wanted to say that I hope you are feeling better.  If you pain is anything like what I was experiencing (sounds JUST like what I experience) you should ask your surgeon about the possibility of adhesions.  The adhesions that my body has formed binds my intestines together and prevent them from floating freely the way they were designed to float within a normal abdominal cavity.  The adhesions stick the intestines together and when food passes through and the intestines attempt to float the way they should, being stuck to each other causes a pull and tug and give a sensation of rolling and stretching feeling followed by pain so intense that it has caused me to double over in pain, it has caused me to pull over on the highway to try and walk it off, it has caused me to weep silently at work, it has caused me to second guess myself because every test came back negative.    My pain comes on suddenly, without warning, and can last a few minutes to several episodes over the course of several days.  While I have been given many medications to help with the pain, nothing stops it completely -- for good!  Just when I think wow!  I haven't felt that pain in a while, I blink and there it is again!

Topic: Adhesions & Hysterectomy after RNY
I had a hysterectomy (uterus removed ovaries left) in 2001,  and then RNY in 2007.  In the summer of 2008 I had to have my ovaries removed because of a mass that was seen on my left ovary during a CT scan and ultrasound testing.  During the surgery to remove the ovaries the doctor could only find one ovary (the one on the right side not the left one) and removed it saying that it was found across my abdomen and that had to be what was showing up on the CT and ultrasound as it did have a non-cancerous small complex cyst.  She thought the missing one from the left side had to have been removed during the original hysterectomy.  She said that she searched my abdominal cavity high and low and no other ovary could be found but that there was an enormous amount of scar tissue from the gastric bypass and other abdominal surgeries.  I have been having abdominal pain and from testing it has been discovered that I now have a mass on what the test are showing is the missing left ovary.  (Yes the very one that was to be operated on the first time.)  The same doctor is going to the surgery but is afraid to do the surgery because of what she found when she went in for the first ovary removal surgery.  She says that what is showing up as an ovarian mass is probably scar tissue from the RNY surgery.  She has me scared to death!  She says that in order to get to the ovary (which she doesn't think is really an ovary -- 3 other second opinion doctors do in fact believe it is an ovary and should come out) she has to peel away the adhesions and look for the ovary.  She says that at any point a tear could be made in the intestines that could cause a baterial infection.  Anyone have abdominal surgery after RNY where adhesions are involved?

Just a quick follow up.  I got a call this morning that the appointment with the follow up with the gastroenterologist appointment is now 8 am and will be longer as per doctor request.  This has me a bit worried as I do not know anything as of yet.  Glad on one hand more time for fiollow up appointment but worried on the other hand that would negate a time difference for the follow up appointment.  I know will think about it alot over the weekend but I know since I do not know anything as of yet it is better to be calm and zen until I know the full details.  So will post more when i know more.

There can be many causes for cramping pain that takes your breath away.  It could be from GERD, psuedo blockage, blockage, stricture, intusseption, slow moving of food eaten, lung or cardivascular issues, could even be pneumothorax blod clot in lung.  That latter is not good.  It could even be from overgrowth of bacterium  but you did the right think by calling your doctor.  Hope things go well.  Keep in positive thoughts.  Let us know when you know more.

Hi Rochelle,
I understand your fears.  I would go ahead and live your life.  I'm not saying don't think about it and not to pay attention, but you can't hole yourself up at home waiting for something to happen that may never come.  I SO hope it never happens for you again!!
I'm flying out of DFW at 6:15 Wednesday morning for LAX then driving on to visit family in the Bakersfield area and the Mojave Desert.  You know, it never crossed my mind to worry about flying or being away from home when I was having my problems.  I knew I couldn't stop them and if it was gonna happen, it was gonna happen.  I'm glad you're staying on top of things.
I hope you enjoy Thanksgiving with your family, it sounds like a great time.  Take care of yourself!!

I am 2 1/2 years out, RNY, I am having severe cramps, like punched in the stomach area. Knocked my breath out. Its an hour now, took 2 tums, still painful to breath, pain comes and goes every several minutes. I have call to GB Surgeons office. Had lab work done 2 weeks ago, and Primary Care Doc did not notice anything much, am waiting for GB office to pull labwork. Bloating also. This has happened 2 to 3 times over the year. I had Spinal Surgury a year ago, and have been on pain meds since. All info passed, am waiting, I have seen posts on cramps, post op. No, I have spinal cord damage, so something to live with, can't fix this, but wonder if it is the percocet, causing cramps? Am on clear liquids per GB on duty nurse. Thank you all, for this website forum. It seems like I only come back after something hits me on the head!
I am taking nexium daily. Vitamin D, Multivitimins, Iron, Calcium Citrate, B complex, B12. And pain meds!

I see the gastrointerologhist on Oct 27 for a follow up of the al biopsies and other tests.  i also have a follow up with the endocrinologist same day.  Not sure what results are as of yet but when the endoscopy was done with a pediatric endoscope they did a modifoed ERCP.  Told the endoscopy and colonospy was unremarkable except for a small area of concern so more biopsies were done in that area.  But i had many done in various areas of the small intestine, roux limb, and with the colonoscopy as well.  the endoscopy went all the way down to end of small intestine.

I tell you the marinol is great stuff even though I get buzz from it but it makes me very sleepy.  Still trying to get insurance to cover it.  they denied it once so in process of getting more info sent to them for reconsideration I also have my local assemblyman also on the case working thier influence from contacts within the state.

All i know i am very tired of getting sick feeling very nauseated and some days barely keeping self hydrated because the mausea is that bad.

Hopefully there are some answers but just need to take one step at a time and do all that is possible.

will update next week when i know more.

Also if not much is found from the last tests then the genetic department may be able to throw some light on the subject.

I got approval for PT so start WED to hopefully help strengthen the muscles to have a better stabilty of joints from being very hypermobile.

All I know is something is going on even the doctors at UCLA know too but trying to find and pinpoint it is this or this could be the proverbial needle in a haystack.

I do know I do tend to present in ways that are not the typical norm.

I hope that in the human genome prodject that I get picked soon so that maybe having all my genes coded could help shed the light in the dark recesses of human cellular and or gene variants not seen that often.

There are just so many unanswered qustions that I seek to always try to find some common thread in the insanity of health issues and symptoms.  May even boil sown to the epigenetic changes from life itself as it ever changes due to external and internal processes so the epigenes are told to turn on certain things that are not supposed to be on or turned off.
