Topic: Joint pain and muscle soreness 3 years post-op RNY
Greetings,
I have been reading with great compassion the suffering of the posters here. Although I have been suffering for about 8 months with WLS related symptoms, reading of the suffering of others puts in all into perspective. Because I know what suffering is (both mental and physical), I have so much empathy for those among us who are struggling to improve our quality of life.

One of the common themes I see here is that our suffering has forced us to become knowlegeable patients who want to be involved in our treatment options. I can empathize with those *****late the experience of sharing what they've learned with their doctors who may have limited experience with post-bariatric patients; we sometimes seem to be more aware of medical terms, symptoms, exams & labs, and meds than our well-meaning physicians. Don't get me wrong; I am relying on my doctors to use all their skill and knowlege to help treat my symptoms. Reading the struggles of those like us has given me more determination be as well-informed as I can and insist on being an active participant in my treatment.

In hopes of coming across someone who has experienced similar symptoms as myself, I have posted on a few different forums and actually was blessed enough to have two people suffering similarly. I am grateful that I am not alone.

I am suffering from joint inflammation and pain. Doctors have ruled out RA and gout, and their working diagnosis is migratory poly-arthritis caused by a bacterial overgrowth somewhere in my GI tract as a result of my RNY in May of 2008.  Anti-biotics haven't cured the overgrowth, so I am scheduled for a consult at the Cedars Sinai GI Motility clinic to see if they can either confirm the diagnosis or pinpoint some other cause and suggest a course of treatment. If we can't find another cause for the joint pain, my PCP and Bariatric surgeon advise reversal of my RNY. At this point, because of the debilitating nature of my joint pain, I am inclined to proceed with the reversal. There are no guarantees it will cure my joint pain. I did have an anastomatic ulcer (due to heavy NSAID use to treat my inflammed joints) which has healed, so at least a revision of the RNY won't be necessary.

After 8 months of physical and emotional suffering, I am staying positive and awaiting a mid-June appointment at Cedars. Waiting for appointments and tests has been a very trying thing during this whole process.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Hello to everyone, I have not had the reversal done yet, I'm going in on Monday May 9th for them to remove scar tissue and maybe the gallbladder. I had the picc line removed last Tuesday because of infection so now I'm on my own for getting food and liquid in me and it is hard, I hurt all the time. My doctor wants to redo the surgery and start all over again, my insurance did approve for that. I was told I had less than 50/50 of the reversal working but a 80-90% of redoing it working. So I guess I'll have to wait until Monday and see what happens when he get's in there and find out what my problem is besides the ulcer. I will keep everyone posted.

I went to the ER last week and got the opposite treatment.  Wicked pain.  They took me right back and in about 10 minutes I start farting like crazy and have a huge bowel movement.  The pain went away and I said that I was ready to go home, feeling rather sheepish.  ER doc said to stay put.  I had a CT scan and an ultra sound done wthing 3 hours.  They took the situation very seriously and understood my added risk of obstruction because of my gastric bypass.

Other than bile reflux from gall bladder surgery I had a year ago, I have done great.

Wow....i am totally amazed at my earlier posts on this subject.  I totally had forgotten that I had had this same problem before.

Well I am back!  I was doing absolutely fine for a while and them BAM!  Back braking, stomache tightening cramps!  And this time around I had them for 6 days straight. None stop, day and nite.  Finally, went into my pcp.  They knew I was sick just by looking at me.  But the only thing test results and cultures showed was that I was severly anemic.  So much so...that I have for the past month been taking blood iron infusions 1x week.  I am at 6grams on my blood iron.  Doc told me ....any exertion and I could have gone into cardiac arrest.  I received Nexium for the stomach cramps and sent on my way.   Problem is that I think that I should be able to eat or drink food without balling over with stomach cramps.

I had my RNY in Las Vegas 9/2008. I regret it and see my Dr. tomorrow about a reversal. My millions of tests have shown no abnormal body or blood results. But I have constant diarrhea and can not leave my house for long. I am incontinenant and poop in my pants, my bed my car..gross!! I feel awful all the time. I have extreme fatigue and severe mental decline and memory problems. When I finally opened my mouth to tell my story I find many people like me. My Dr. is a good one and the tests show the surgery was done correctly. I have followed all advice and take all vitamins but my body simply will not tolerate this bypass that I have done to it. I have done nothing wrong but I felt guilty like I failed. After time on the internet and talking to other people I find that this is not uncommon. Many people keep their mouth shut or their Drs. shush them up. I thought the outcome of this surgery was more predictible. I was given a sheet of paper saying how much weight I would lose at what rate and all of the wonderful benefits I could expect, but what happened to me happens to many. My primary care Dr, walked out of the room when I said I want a reversal, so I changed to another who is sympathetic. My Gastroenterologist Assistant didn't know what to do so all she did was test me for a year, telling me "we will figure this out." when she couldn't find anything, she recommended benefiber for the diarrhea. That was the last straw for me. My insurance actually pays for the reversal. They paid to get me this way and they can pay to fix it I figure. Do not keep your mouth shut and do not be pushed around by doctors who don't know how to handle this. Demand that someone fix it.

Thanks for replying. I noticed that you are several years out from your RnY. How are you doing? I'am still steering in that direction, but have B12 and iron deficient anemia that I have had for awhile so I'm not sure if it's safe for me. Also looking into the sleeve if insurance covers it.
