Topic: RE: Severe Stomach Pain
It could be a Petersen's hernia caused by weight loss.
What is it? It could kill you!!
I have a horror story for you.
I was having abdominal pain about 4 years after surgery and I actually had intestinal malrotation caused by a Petersen's hernia where weight loss causes extra space in the abdomen. The small intestine wrapped around the large intestine and strangled the large intestine. I was about 2 hours from death when I had emergency bowel resection surgery losing 20 cm of small intestine and additional weight loss to 30 pounds BELOW my goal weight. I have recovered somewhat but my nutrition is all messed up. Apparently there is a fairly common problem with Petersen's hernias that I never imagined I'd have to deal with.
Get an MRI or a scan of your abdomen if pain persists at all but be aware the Petersen's hernias are usually not seen in an MRI or a scan. Mention your WLS to your doctor and mention a possible Petersen's hernia. I thought my pain would magically go away after a few days but it didn't and waiting almost killed me.
I wish I knew about Petersen's hernias when the pain first started that's why I'm posting here to raise awareness of this complication.
Good luck & God Bless!!

Topic: Have you had a surgery out of the states????
Hey everyone, I am contemplating a surgery in MX. I am going to meet with the surgeon and see the hospital in 2 weeks and then hopefully I will have the ability and confidence to schedule a surgery. I can't afford the $22000 surgery here in MN so I am venturing out. I know this is the "complication" sight, and I am wondering if any of you have had any personal experience/or complications with surgery outside of the states???
Topic: RE: List of comps. after long term (89') BPD (Long Loop RNY) reversal
Shoot me a real email at [email protected]
We can fix your vit D in about 2 weeks, but the list I have includes dx codes, test codes and so on. Makes it easy for the docs.
Are they testing your other fat solubles? A, E, K, Selenium?
Yeah, see high B12 in the absence of IF or actual B12 is an indicator of "something else", which means I have no clue. LOL

Topic: I had my RNY Reversed!!!!!
I am so thankful to have had my RNY reversed. I had my original RNY surgery on 2/28/2011 and on 8/16/2011 I had it reversed. Already I feel that I am gaining back my life. I was headed to death and only God himself could restore me and HE did just that. I had a wonderful surgeon who performed the surgery lap, which is a blessing and I have had no more nausea since the 3rd day in the Hospital. I am still recovering and healing, but I want to let people know that you know what is best for your body and only you know how you feel. There is Hope and Help out there...don't give up! If anyone would like more details, please feel free to send me a message as I am definately willing to share my story.

Topic: RE: List of comps. after long term (89') BPD (Long Loop RNY) reversal
I take 50,000 IUs of vit D2 every 3weeks, and I'm always telling docs to order MMA, Homocys., folic acid, etc. According to their lab values, these are now normal.
I assume it's bile reflux since without most of a stomach, there's not going to be much HCL (or even intrinsic factor to convert into B 12). The B 12 should be low but it's high---weird or maybe due to SIBO???
My method for ordering lab tests includes culling research articles (via MedLine) and looking at what the bariatric surgery ctrs. are requesting. I get my docs to add anything else they think is good.
I'd still like to see what you have on your list though.
Thanks,
DJ

What are you taking for vit D?
High B12. What's your folic? Have they tested MMA and homocystein? those can be tangled up with B12.
I can send you a list of labs, codes that help the docs order them, and the targets I personally like to see.
Do you have bile or acid reflux?

Topic: RE: Anyone had a wound vac??
Now orries about the wound vac. I am an RN and have dealt with tons of wound vacs. They have small units for home and are really no big deal. they close wounds fast. Your dressing changes can be performed at home by a visiting nurse or you can go to a clinic too. Don't be fearful of it! it will help a lot If you have any questions or problems you can email me at [email protected]. It will come right to my smart phone.
