Topic: could this be a blocked bile duct had gallbladder removed a year ago
hmm last week double over in sharp stabbing pain had a ct scan was normal and blood work was good except for my liver test were abnormal. I had 2 servere attacks one last 45 min to an hour.. then again 30 min after eating lunch then it went away I stuck with soft diet the rest of the day then I was back to eating normally. The last few days just come and go dull pain. Today more of the dull pain in upper right under the rib cage had couple sharp pains but nothing like last Friday.

The surgeon office was suppose to call me back yesterday or today no call I call them at the end of the day but was told that the surgeon wont be in the office until Friday and the assistant already left for the day so hopefully she will get back to me tomorrow. Hubby is concern as he sees me holding my tummy alot. I try to hide it from him he just had back surgery 2 weeks ago so all my focus is taking care of him and our 2 kids. I had my gallbladder taken out Oct 2010 had my rny july 28, 2009. The assistant said it could be my bile ducts could be blocked? But either a utrasound or endoscopy would need to be done. But again I hear nothing more probaby because I never call back to say hey i am in pain since it wasnt' the stabbing pain I figure I could just deal with it by taking a pain pill and gas x just in case it is gas. Anyone have this issue before? Could abnormal liver test be block bile duct?

I also had a peterson hernia July 2010 had it repair can you get another one it did not show up on the ct scan and no blockage was seen or twisted bowels as well. When I had my hernia it also wasn't seen on the ct scan but it show something was wrong when the pancreas enzymes was 4 times over the limit which then went in emergency explore surgery and it was found and fix. My gallbladder wasn't seen thru all the traditional test like ultrasound they had to do a hida scan and the dye wouldn't even fill in the the gallbladder so more or less I had a gallbladder that stop working.

Topic: 6th Hernia - oh my
I feel like I've been one big complication after another since surgery in 2003.  Sure, I've lost almost 200 lbs but read what I've been through.  You'll be shaking your head....................
Four months after surgery I was hospitalized with low potassium, a stricture and adhesions.  More surgery.  The rest of 2004 was pretty uneventful, although I did meet my now husband.  2005 - a hernia, and two strictures (all at different times).  2006, ugh, adhesions, small bowel obstruction and another stricture and hernia.  2007 was uneventful thankfully.  All this time I was continuing to lose weight and be healthy, although my diet is not always the greatest, I do try to make good choices.  2008, a hernia and then later another stricture.  2009  stricture after a bout with the stomach flu.  2010 was an awful year.  Hernia surgery  then I had a stricture in which the surgeon perforated my stomach and I wound up in emergency surgery to repair, only to be rushed back in 3 days later because my intestine ruptured and I was septic.  I developed pneumonia, liver failure, kidney failure MERSA - you name it.  I was in ICU for 30 days and out of work for many months.  March 2011 - another fricken hernia.  So, around June 2011 I'm feeling better and went back to work.  Hubby and I joined a yoga class in September and guess what????  I hurt myself.  Apparently yoga is not for me!  Another hernia.  Surgery is scheduled for the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.  I have had so many complications, but to look at me I'm the picture of health.  I'm at a good weight, all is good with blood pressure, blood work etc.  but inside I'm a mess.  I guess walking is the only exercise I can do now.  My stomach looks like a road map.  Sigh.  Life goes on.  Here's hoping 2012 will be operation free!

Viv,
I'm glad to read that everything is ok :) Thank you for your words of encouragement, I do feel so grateful as well for this forum to unload every now and then.  I also have found that it can be a way to reach out to others who may feel that they are alone in these complications.  I felt that way for awhile.  I wish there weren't others who have such a hard time, but I am thankful that there is a place for us.  I'll add you as a friend so we can keep an eye on eachother :)
Stay well!

Topic: Latest update from Cleveland Clinic/EGD trouble
I just got back from Cleveland on Sunday.  I was supposed to come back on Saturday, but I had a complication after my EGD.  I know you aren't supposed to remember anything from the sedation procedures, but I think at some point the medication may have started wearing off a bit because I do recall waking up while they were in the middle of the procedure and gagging/wretching like crazy, and they tried to talk me through it, and then the next thing I remembered was waking up in recovery.  My throat was dry, which is normal, but all those meds were still on board, so I didn't really have any soreness or trouble swallowing until about 4 hours later in my hotel room.  I had napped when I got back from the procedure, and when I woke up I was really thirsty, so I tried to sip some water and even though I have never personally swallowed glass, I think I know what it feels like.  I have had so many of these EGD's/upper endoscopies that if it weren't for the sedation part, I feel like I could do one to myself; so I know what to expect.  I usually get a mild to moderate sore throat for a few hours, no big deal, sometimes no sore throat at all.  I remembered the gagging/wretching, so I wasn't really starting to panic yet.  I had my procedure around 12pm, and they said I couldn't take my regular pain meds for 8 hours, so I waited, took my pain meds, and it had zero effect, and the weird thing was that it wasn't the back of my throat that was sore, it was way at the base of my neck, and shooting into my left chest.  It was worse when I tried to breathe in deeply and swallowing.
I have never taken an ambulance to the ER, I have gone from one hospital to another in one, but never to the ER as a patient in one...I'm used to being on the other end of the cot, either driving or in the back with a patient.  I felt silly as I rode in this ambulance going to the ER at Cleveland Clinic, but I just knew something was wrong, and I am glad that I followed that feeling.  It was kind of confusing because although the ER resident was very nice, he didn't hear any air escaping when he listened to my neck/chest, so he was still going to order some tests but was pretty confident that everything was ok.  The ER attending came in and he listened to my chest and neck for a lot longer, and he heard something that was not right.  I ended up starting with an x-ray, and there was an abnormality that they could see, so then they were going to do a CT Scan (ah, more radiation, that's what I was thinking).  After talking to the radiologist, they decided that it would be better for the Ear/Nose/Throat doctor to come to the ER and do an intra-nasal scope...cue the giant freak out here!!!! I can take a million needles, pain, whatever...but I really have a thing about anything that is going to mess with my gag reflex, just can't take it.  I spent the next hour freaking out waiting for the ENT to get there.  I convinced the ER folks that it would be in everyones best interest to give me something to relax/pain med right before the doc started, and they did...I have to admit that it was all OK in the end, but seeing that 12" long scope that she was going to jam up my nose and down my throat pushed me to the edge.  I also had some time to ponder if what they were seeing on the x-ray was possibly cancer because that was discussed...it was just really a scary time.  In the end, they gave me a mega dose of IV antibiotic, pain control, fluids, and determined that the symptoms plus the weird x-ray added up to a microscopic leak of the esophagus that was causing the pain and weird air leak sound the ER doc was hearing in my chest.  I spent about 12 hours in the ER, and then went back to the hotel, stayed an extra day to make sure I felt ok going home, and then headed home.  It's still pretty painful, but it will get better as it heals.
I'm going back to Cleveland November 14th to meet with the surgeon to see if he has anything in his bag of tricks that can improve my quality of life and/or surgically treat the cause of my very frequent pain/nausea episodes.  I am also going to discuss the possibility of placing a medication port.  I'm seriously running out of veins, and the PICC line is just too much of a risk of infection, and I can't work with a PICC.  The last few PICC's I had kept failing anyway.
So, this last trip was a lesson in Listen to Thyself, if something doesn't feel right, and you have the heebie jeebies, don't ignore the signs, there's probably something wrong.
I hope this finds you all getting better, and at the very least, getting the right care and answers :)

I still try and keep my positive attitude, nice to know it shows lol
I am going back to Cleveland Clinic again in November to see the surgeon, and among other things, I am going to talk to him about doing a port.  It was a 3 ring circus obtaining IV access for my EGD, and then I ended up in the ER at the clinic later that evening because I had a microscopic tear/leak in my esophagus from the EGD.  They did get the IV in the ER, but it was very finicky, they couldn't advance the catheter in the vein all the way due to scar tissue, so it was basically taped with the catheter hanging halfway out in order to work.  I needed it to work, so I didn't care at that point.
Thanks for the input :)

Thank you Janette :)
an IV in your neck is pretty desperate and scary, I'm sorry about that, it stinks!  May I ask why you have had 6 ports? Do they fail like the PICCs do?  I hope that you spend less time in and out of the hospital, and feel better :)  I will keep in touch,  have been trying to be better about checking in on here to see how everyone is doing.
Thanks,
Jules

vein envy. that's a new one on me:). throughout my weight loss journey, i have envied many things ( people who can eat whatever they want and not gain weight, people with firm, toned bodies), but never thought about veins, except varicose veins. you are so funny.

so nice to see you posting, haven't heard from you in a while.  i love your positive attitude.

since you're asking, i think you should get a port. if an emergency happens (God forbid), you def don't want medical personnel having a problem putting a line in. and i know you don't want to leave the er.

Hi Viv. Thanks for updating. Glad you are doing better.
As for me... I got to my goal...and the doc goal.. But at 50... at 143 lbs I got down to size 4... It did not feel good,a and I looked too thin, too old (hanging skin). I have large frame, proportional build, with boobs... I had no butt to sit on.
I wanted to gain 10 -15 lbs... I gained 25+... I got to size 8-10.  That was a bit too heavy for me... (vanity). So now - I try to lose the extra, and get back into large 6- small 8s.  I think I am there.. lol..
I do feel good and look OK.  so the motivation to lose the weight and really work hard on it - is not there... I think you know what I mean.
So far so good.  This morning I tried on some of my size 6's - and some fit snag, but comfortable, and others - do not fit (yet...lol). So that;'s my story.
I do deal with RH - reactive hypoglycemia. From mild to severe... depends on the day... (i.e. most carbs - even the good ones may make me get the RH - i.e oatmeal).  Life...
If you wantto read my story - you will have to friend me... my blog is only available to friends. Sent you a request.

Thanks for asking, Hala!  I have grandbabies visiting, so I've been a little flying woman and haven't done anything but chase diapers!  It's amazing that I have the energy to do that!  :)  Actually, I think I'm fine.  The surgeon said that the lump is inside the muscle itself.  I had guessed scar tissue, and that's what he said, too, except  he also said, "Hmmm.  You had mesh, didn't you?"  I don't have a clue whether I had mesh or not, but I guess that would make sense.  Anyway, it doesn't hurt at this point---just a pinch or tug every once in awhile.  I go back to the doctor in a couple of months for him to recheck.

Now I'm just trying to find my place in my new reversed world.  I'm fine, except everytime I see half a pound up on the scale, I have a minor freak out session.  I have so much to learn about how my body works.  One weird thing---I'm no longer lactose intolerant!  So interesting.

Are you trying to lose more weight, or is it just happening?  I haven't read your story, but I will.
