this may be a stupid question with all your troubles but I know you suffer from sever gastroparesis from your vagus nerve problems - have you been on reglan or other meds like that? In 1998, I had surgery for acid reflux and my reflux was completely gone after that but about 3 months later it came back and I was nausous all the time like I never had before. My gastro doctor did some tests and said I had gastroparesis and put me on reglan and within a few weeks of adjusting the dose, the reflux was gone and so was the nausea - I also took zofran for the nausau. I couldn't believe. reglan was a miracle. I actually took it up until my RNY in 2008 and hten I stopped it. It didn't come back thankfully.

Topic: RE: Exploratory surgery for stomach pain....
I am writing b/c I have been having severe right side lower abdomenal pain. I have been to three different doctors just recently. I have had a cat scan and a abdomanal ultrasound. At one place I was told that I had cysts on the right overy and they could not see the left overy. Another dr said that I have a small non cancerous tumor on the right side of my uterus and agreed that they could not find the left overy but that there was a fluid filled area in the left tube...however I am not having as much pain on the left as the right..It hurts all the time...severely. I should not be able to feel pain that strong b/c I have fentynl patches from two prior back surgery related problems...but the pain is so bad it takes my breath. I also seem to be swelling in my abdomen and not to be blunt, but it hurts to be "active" ....also that causes bleeding. I have had tubal ligation and tubal ablation. Ok, now the one doctor wants to do exploratory surgery very soon. I am also scared that they will open me up and find nothing...and people will say it was all in my head. I know it's not...the pain is very very real. If you have had anything like this, please tell me b/c I am so scared...Thanks

You can opt to do a gallbladder flush instead?
Take care.

Cheryl,
As far as I know, he wasn't supposed to cut it. It's a long story. I've had test after test, trying to pinpoint the problem. It is especially tough, as you know being an RN, when you have some medical knowledge. It seems like it should be the opposite. Please keep me posted, and good luck!

Topic: RE: I'm still here...
Thank you very much. I was just telling my friend today that I still see silver linings on clouds and find humor in stuff, as long as that continues I know that I'm still ok :)
I go stretches without logging in here, mostly because I'm busy in the hospital, but I keep coming back for the support and if I help one person in the process then it's all good!
Thanks
Jules

Thank you for all the thoughts/ideas :) I have had my gallbladder removed, and at some point they thought I had the Sphincter of Oddi so I had the MRCP, and then the ERCP (which gave me a mild case of pancreatitis, and if that was mild I have a new appreciation for my ER patients with pancreatitis, very painful!)
I do have diarrhea, it's not pretty. The constant flow of bile from my G-Tube is disturbing for me, but my docs seem to think its a norm with the tube, especially in the morning. It's been crazy. Thank you again. I take all info in, and I do a lot of research (I'm sure we all do, right?)

jbird - I just want to say that it is good to see that you are OK. I have been reading your story (I had VSG 10/24/11) and did a lot of reading on these boards before my surgery. I am so sorry for all you have had to go through, and am always impressed at your positive attitude. I hope you continue to keep us updated on your journey.

Thanks Jules. Years ago when I started out in nursing they used to do vagotomys all the time for ulcers. You are correct that they don't anymore. My understanding is a selective vagotomy has quite a few less side effects than just a vagotomy. Was your selective or did he cut the entire nerve like they used to do. I will definitely read your blog. thanks so much for responding.

Cheryl,
I know my blog is really long to read, but you may want to check it out. My original surgeon did an unintentional Vagotomy somewhere along the way (of course I had no idea, and it has just been recently that my new surgeon has sorted it out). The vagus nerve controls many body functions in addition to the movement of the digestive system. From what I understand, intentional vagotomies are not common anymore for ulcers, especially anastomotic ulcers (which are typically traumatic ulcers vs peptic ulcers). I was on the verge of having a pyloroplasty done at some point (to speed up the emptying of the stomach), which from what I understand would have probably made me more sick, and I probably would have had dumping syndrome/symptoms each time I ate.
I'm not saying don't do it, just get at least one more, if not two more opinions from surgeons (don't forget about GI too), and from MAJOR medical centers (Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, Johns Hopkins, etc...No distance is too far for your health). In two years I have made about a dozen trips to Cleveland clinic, and it's 450 miles one way for me. I hope this helps, and get better :)

Topic: RE: reverse gastric bypass
I Had my RNY bypass in March 9th 2011,was sick and in alot of pain from the get go. In April I had a endoscopy done to check for blockage and leaks. Dr. Hachem said all looked good. later that day I was admitted into another hospital for dehydration. In May had another surgery to find out My liver was infused bad with adheasions Dr put in a Gtube for extra nutriction. Had it taken out in Sept, felt pretty good for about a month and it all started all over again. Had 2 more surgeries 2 weeks apart in Nov.and G tube put back in with constant around the clock feeding. It was a big mess. I couldnt take no more. Dr Hachem suggected 2 options to reroute the byass or reversal. i choose the reversal My insurance approved it and in Jan 2012 I had it done. My starting weight before the bypass was 227. in 9 months my weight dropped down to 115. I look sick. It has been 8 weeks since I had my reversal. I am still sick cant eat much at all ( but am able to take in fluids) when I do eat I either start vomitting or it all runs right thru me. My big thing is now people are so worried about regaining weight back after reversal but here I am still loosing. I am down to 110 at 8 weeks post op and dont know what else to do. I do know I am sick of being in the hospital. If you have any questions on the reversal feel free to email me at [email protected] but make sure you question about bypass reversal cause i think some thing are viruses. Dr Hachem in Kansas is a awesome Dr and he never once hesitated to sit and listen to me and did all he could and still does to make me comfortable.
