I have had the burping also. Mine came after my VBG surgery 9/2003, alot of it whether I am eating, drinking or nothing. It is very annoying and I don't think I am swallowing alot of air either. Wish I knew what causes it also. Karen

Topic: RE: Post-op Depression
I had depression issues after my RNY...It was so frustrating, everyone at my support groups were going on and on about how this was the greatest thing they ever did.  Hunger was not a big issue for me at first, but I get that whole missing how you usually cope (for me, binge eating) But I started talking about it, and finally in support group people started admitting they felt depression too.  There seems to be this attitude from WLS fols that they can't admit that there is anything negative about this surgery.  Even on this board, when people admit feeling bad, people really respond negatively. You are still recovering from surgery..that in itself is difficult...try not to isolate yourself...Try to talk to other people.  But most of all try not to second guess yourself..

Topic: RE: Stomach problems 6 yrs. post op.
I keep having a similar problem...I get left sided very severe abdominal pain...I have been to the ER about six times....My surgeon thinks I have some sort of surgical adhesions, but there is no evidence on the CAT scans , the MRI, the Ultra sound or Upper GI.....I have no acid or ulcer like problems though...The doc also is considereing the possibility that my resected intesting around the the pouch is actually twisting...I get pain so severe that I have screamed and I get a cold sweat, followed by an overall clamminess and nausea. I have acutally feeling pretty awful for the last two days....I think this time though it is a drug reaction.  I have been having severe lower abdominal cramping for the last two days.  I called the doc who got me a prescription for Bental and it seems to working...The nearly constant cramping has turned into a very severe contraction like cramp about every twenty minutes or so...The area i around my navel is terribly tender, if I push down on it it seems to set off intense pain..  It also feels unusually hard..and distenended, I can hardly tolerate a waste band...so I have on a pair of stretchy pains rolled down....my whole abdomen feels like I have been working out...I took an injection of Methotrexate, an arthritis drug and this whole thing got started then.  Thank God I know I'm not pregnant, and don't think this is a gynecologic problem, because I can hear my intenstines making noise...I am very naussous, but no fever, diarrhea or vomiting...I took some bental, and as I said, the cramping is less severe, but I feel terrible.... The surgeon has said when I get severe pain, I should come in for an evaluation, But it is a holiday weekend...I am hoping to avoid it...So in the mean time, I am trying some ginger tea and a warm heating pad.....

Topic: RE: Open wound on abdomen after surgery.
My open RNY incision took about 7 months to heal....I had a wound care nurse, and because I have an autoimmune disorder, my medications inhibited healing...I eventually got what is called a wound vac...it sounds way worse than it is, but it is a little machine that  draws away fluid from the the wound and helps it heal.   I went back to surgery twice to have dead tissue removed...All in all it was pretty awful, and totally unexpected....Sometimes I wonder if I went deaf when I was at the intoductory seminar and the prep classes.  I saw all of these successful weight losers and I really didn't think alot about the list of complications....

Thanks for your reply! I've been feeling better, but BOY oh BOY, things have changed.  I can't eat like I could before my internal hernia, I really have to watch what I eat, cause it seems like I get more gassy, faster and worse.  I've tried to narrow it down, but can't seem to find what causes it. I could it one thing one day and its good, the next day it makes me sick! I should be thankful, I wont have to worry about regaining, will I?  Ive maintained my weight of 145lbs  (give or take) down from 292lbs.  I'm very happy with that. Thanks again for your input! Topic: RE: Recurring Incisional Hernia

I'm curious, did you talk to a lawyer about their refusal to pay? Or ask your employer to intercede? I have had 3 hernias. They finally had to use the cadaver tissue to repair it as patches just weren't doing it, I didn't have enough muscle left to attach it to. It  has been over a year and is working great. However with a hugh hernia like you have, the doctors explained it to me that there is really not much protecting your internal organs but skin and hopefully a small layer of fat. They told me not having surgery was just not an option and told me to never go without an abdominal support for extra protection!

Hi, I had RNY in 2003, and I remember well what you are going through.  Don't give up, it will get better!  Right now you are grieving your old life and that is very normal. Just hang in there, follow the rules, go for a walk when that feeling hits. If it doesn't get better, talk to your doc about short term antidepressants. Your pouch will eventually stretch a little and you will be able to eat a little more normally. It just takes time and trial and error. Just make sure you get in the things you need. When you reach a significant amount of weight loss and start feeling wonderful both physically and mentally it will seem worth it and you will for the most part stop missing your best friend (food).

Topic: RE: Hypoglycemia & Pituitary tumor
My finace has had, what is called in the post-bariatric popultation, reactive hypoglycemia for several years.  I had surgery 16 months ago and have had about 5 attacks in the last couple of months.  They are very scarey and very dangerous, and so I have been looking on-line quite a bit.  THis article has some interesting info about the potential causes in bariatric patients: http://www.joslin.org/1083_3059.asp From what I have read, diet (basically the diet we have been told to eat - high protein, low carbs) can remedy most reactive hypoglycemia.  although the article above talks about a few people for which that didn't work and reasons why that may have been the case.  Here is another that talks about the importance of vitamin levels on our ability to process insulin: http://www.arltma.com/HypoDysDiaDoc.htm For some reason, my dr. did not order, or the lab missed the order for, an iron test when I got my labs done in oct.  I was chewing on ice constantly, mentioned it to a friend, and she said I probably had low iron.  I did.  I also started having night sweats sometime around Dec and poor body temp regulation in general (always cold during the day, go to bed freezing and wake up in the middle of the night sweating like crazy).   Body temp reg has to do with iron.    So for me, I am thinking the hypoglycemia has to do with low iron.  Also, I am watching what I eat...no simple sugars, alcohol, etc. and I am hoping this will help.    I have been wondering if people have been assuming they are just having a dumping syndrome when in reality they are having a hypoglycemia attack (the symptoms are similar).  I am sure someone who thinks they are dumping is not about to ingest sugar, which you need to do to correct hypoglycemia) so I wonder if they are not fixing the attack immediately and how dangerous this is, what kind of problems it has caused, in our population.    I would be intersted in hearing others experiences.
