I just found out on monday that I have a huge ulcer in my pouch, the doc prescribed me the carafate, mine is caused because I am steriod dependant on prednisone, for which I take for addisons disease. I have to continue with the prednisone and pray that I can get the ulcer to heal. My gastric doc is very scared, he told me there isn't any surgery they can do to help me and can't reverse my surgery... I have lost 200 lbs and had no complications except throwing up after eating and thinking I had very bad GERD. So I am looking for anyone who is going through what I am.... I was told if the ulcer periforates my pouch I will die a painful death... I am very scared only getting this news a couple days ago... Any suggestions anyone?

I had the RNY laparoscopic bypass in 2009. I started experiencing the same type of pain in 12/2010. My physician decided to do an exploratory laparoscopy on me to determine what was causing my left flank, and middle back pain. I had already had the GI series done, the Endoscopy was negative, the CT scan was also negative, but the excruciating pain could not be ignored. The result of the surgery was a large internal hernia in the mesentary of my intestines. This area has many nerve endings which is why the pain was so bad. After surgery I had immediate relief, the surgeon repaired the tear and I was released within 2 days. No more problems until a year later where I presented with the same symptoms. I had another exploratory lap done with the same results. The hernia was repaired and I returned to normal. My surgeons are not quite sure why I keep having the tears but it keeps on happening. I am presently experiencing the same pain now, I hope its not a repeat but it appears to be.
My symptoms are nausea, inability to get food down, crampy, colicky pain in flank and middle back area. I also have shortness is breath when inhaling (it feels like I have a tight belt around my waist). I am being re-evaluated by my surgeon. Wish me luck 3 times would not be a charm.

Hi there - I too am in your boat however, I only just had surgery back on April 4th. I developed an infection in my old stomach about 6 days later and had to have a laperotomy. It was discovered a week later that I had a leak and then two weeks later that I have a gastrogastric fistula that is sitting right at the base of my esophagus. I've been in the hospital twice and have now been on TPN for a month. I'm on clear liquids but not allowed to eat anything.
My doctors are also taking the wait and see approach but I'm not on any meds. My frustration is that they can't say how long they want to wait. From the research I've done sometimes these will heal on their own but they can take a very long time, and most will require surgery of some type to be corrected. I'm not happy with waiting and am currently researching other doctors who may be willing to be more aggressive. I've heard good things about the Cleveland Clinic and we contacted them yesterday. I've just got to work on faxing them the paperwork they requested.
This whole situation is a real ***** and I wouldn't wi**** on my worst enemy. I always feels like there's a golf ball sitting right under my breast bone and I'm nauseous all day.
I wish you the best of luck and God bless you...
Please keep us posted. If you have good experiance- that may help others who deal with the same issue..
There is some info I found. I do hope that will work for you.

Do you know if the esophyx procedure for GERD is available to RNY patients?
"My 3 Rs for success: Remain focused on my goals, Remain committed, Remove Toxins from my life(toxic people, toxic situations, toxic foods)"
Stoma is the opening between the pouch and the small intestines. If stoma is open - you should not get GERD... The acid that the pouch makes will just flow into the small intestines.
RNY has the best statistic to fix GERD. But it does not work for everyone...
I did not have GERD before RNY , but post op - last 4 years i have to take antacids, or I get the reflex. For me - RNY worked the other way....
