I thought CPM was from prolonged hyponatremia? What would be the iatrogenic part?

Two out of one hundred doesn't sound like much unless you or someone you love is one of the two or two of the two!! :-(  I think the rate of occurence is accurate for "now" but these things are adjusted as reported and for the public,  it usually is a year or two behind in the data / stats. It will be interesting to see if it is adjusted.  I have read as high as 5% for internal hernias now which is considered a bowel obstruction so those rates may already be showing / rising in the data.

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

Feel free to read my story.  I've had an internal hernia and 4 other obstructions.   Insist on finding out the source of your pain -- a "guess" is NOT sufficient.  Call your WLS ASAP.  Don't wait.  One time, I was 12-24 of perforating which could have been fatal.  Another time, I ended up in ICU.   You should have an complete work up and if nothing is discovered, exploratory surgery should be considered.  Only ONE out of my FIVE obstructions showed on a CT Scan.  How frightening is that? Don't wait.  Do it today.

I am so very sorry about your friends!   I can't agree more about going to the hospital when there is any abdominal pain.   I have had five (5) obstructions.  I was also once in ICU and am fortunate to be alive.  The first obstruction took over 7 months to diagnose and one bariatric surgeon that agreed to see me in my new home city failed to diagnose me insisting that there was nothing wrong with me.  If it weren't for the compassion and listening skills of my WLS, I'd certainly be dead as not just the first but three others were found exploratory and did not show on ANY scans, XRays, blood testing, etc.   Abdominal pain is the most difficult "illness / disease" to diagnose.  As a WLS patient, one should be especially aware as time can be critical.  Know your body.  Know it well.  Press forward if you're being dismissed.  My own advocacy saved my life.

18 mos ago I lost a good friend (48 yo and 4years post rny)to a sudden bowel obstruction.  Now another close friend  (58 yo and 5 years post rny)has been in icu for 2 weeks after a bowel obstruction...we do not know if she will be with us much longer. Neither had much warning or other health problems. For the record I only know a few people who had gastric bypass, not the majority of my friends and collegues. I am upset and freaked.  I wasn't really warned about this complication pre op, and then told this is a very rare occurance....but is seems to be much more common and serious than 2% figure my surgeon is giving me. Anyone else noticing a lot of these occuring?    Please if you have any stomach pains that last more than 30 minutes GO TO THE ER!

The ultrasound showed my gall bladder was OK.  Also the ED doctor didn't think from my symptoms that it was gallbladder.

Topic: Ulcer pain or Hernia pain?
Yesterday, I had some pretty severe abdominal pain, mostly high in my abdomen under my sternum and above my naval.  I went to the ER when it did not subside after about 5 hrs.  The ED doc did some labs, and an ultrasound.  Gave me iv Fentanyl for pain, which didn't really help. The tests did not show anything, but the ER doc was suspicious of an ulcer and gave me a prescription for Nexium.  Before I left the ER, about  8 hrs after it had started, my pain and tenderness was almost completely gone.  So I tried to eat a bit when I got home because I had to know if I was gonna be OK to go to work today.  The pain returned, although was much less severe. I did call in sick for the day though just to see if it would get any worse/better.  (I am a nurse and work 12 hr shifts and there is no way I could have worked with that pain).  When I get to searching on line about what might be the problem, 2 things come up: ulcers and internal hernia (Petersen's hernia).  I had one other episode of pain like this 6-8 wks ago.  No nausea with it, just a sharp, colicky pain that was worse even with a swallow of water.  It started after eating a few bites for lunch.   In between episodes I have had maybe some smaller episodes that have resolved inabout 2 hrs with less intense pain.  So who can tell me about ulcers and internal hernia symptoms/pain? BTW, I don't drink, smoke and less than a cup of coffee a day in caffeine.
