Topic: RE: Short of breath, any thoughts?
Hi, I have been having the same problem since last october. I have had lung scans and pressure test on my lungs and they said it is not my lungs. I know it is not my heart because I had a stress test and they looked at my valves . My chest always feels tight and it gets worse when I eat anything.  I am calling my doc this week for another appt. I went to him months ago but he had me drink the white stuff and he said everything was fine and it was something else. But after tons of blood test test and xrays and  we know it is not the lungs or heart. I know that it does get worse when I eat. If I push down on something with my arms - it takes the weight off my chest for a minute - then I can take a deep breath. And now my band feels like it has gotten tighter on it's own. Too tight . You are the first person tht I know of who is having the same breathing problem as me. I have had 3 doctors tell me it's just anxiety and to take some pills for it. I didn't because I know that's not the problem. Please keep in touch and tell me what you find out.  I can't believe I have found someone else going thru the samething as me and that I'm not alone anymore. Take care - Shea

Topic: RE: Complications still.( sorry very long)
Dear Rene:  My name is Patricia Patton We are from the same area. I am from Uniontown and can tell you I have had massive complications as well. I recently got out of Sewickley Hospital after another 8 day stay and my 7th surgery since my original gastric bypass on 4/23/2007. I have had revisions to both anastomosis, my gallbladder removed and numerous dilatations and 7 endoscopies. I am malnourished and dehydrated pretty much all the time now and that feeling of no energy is profound. I truly understand what you are going through. I feel my life ebbing away each day. My labs are always bad. I am so depressed now, because I grieve the life I had, I grieve the life I thought I would have by having the surgery and grieve the life that I now live with.Listen to the gal Heather. I am going to the Cleveland Clinic at my surgeon's request who has been nothing but, kind to me. A reversal is not an option on my part but, my surgeon wants me to consider it. I have a feeding tube in right now and get night time feedings to help buidl me back up. the desire for food is non existant and I fight to take any liquids or food in.But, I try I just pray it has been from all these surgeries that my body needs to recover...if you write me personally maybe we can exchange numbers and we can be supportive of one another. I visit Sewickley at least every other week to see the surgeon and perhaps we can meet or I can drop by and we can just be supportive of one another. It would be a great help to have someone to talk to who understands these crazy complications that were not suppose to happen....Patricia Patton

God Bless you Denise.  I hope you get your transplant.  We really have made a deal witht he devil when we had this surgery, I never thought that I would be this scared this far out. (rny Nov 10 2003). I believed I had done thorough research and was led to believe that If I survived the surgery and took all my vitamins regularly I was in no danger. Now I know differently.

I never recommend the surgery any more.

I had weight loss surgery in 2004.  On May 28, 2007, I was rushed to the hospital, I could not breathe and had a faint pulse.  I was immediately placed on a ventilator and the surgeons asked my husband to give permission for them to do exploratory surgery.  The surgeons discovered that my small intestine had tied a knot around my colon, strangled and grangrened.  The surgeons removed my entire small intestine and a small piece of colon.  The doctors told me that I will never be able to eat or drink again unless I have a small bowel transplant which I am currently on the waiting list.  I receive my nutrients intravenousley by TPN (Total Parental Nutrition).  Prior to going to the emergency room I had begun to have severe stomach pains which began in 2006.  I would go to the ER but the doctors would contribute it to me being constipated or that I possible ate to much.  I am blessed to be alive that night on May 28 I went through Kidney failure and respiratory distress.  My transplant doctor said that he is seeing alot more patients coming through his office for transplant because of small bowel obstruction.

UPDATE: It's closed. Actually has been fully closed a little over a month. A pretty nice scar remains 1" x 1" and it's indented a bit but i guess it could be worse!

Will watching what I eat be enough to prevent this problem?  Maybe.  Sometimes it does.  Sometimes it doesn't.  That's where I am now.  Either I deal with never touching carbs, and having few symptoms, or risking frequent symptoms if I eat any.  Either way, it's a big game.

Becareful with increasing your vitamins as to much of the b vitamins can cause neuropathy as was told to me by my neurologist.   He also stopped me from doubling up my minerals also.  I am now taking omega-3 fish oil tablets to help with the nerve pathways (also a natural anti-depressant  as it increases the seritonan levels.)  Since my nerve decompressions were done on May 11th I can now move my right fooot up avout 3 incehes.  Nothing noticeble on the left yet except when they zap me with the stimulator.  Hoping I can stop wearing the brace on my right this week.  I dread going to therapy but it is helping.  Will have  a differant therapist starting today as the last one was dead wrong in ignoring my complaints that she was hurting me as the machine was turned up to high - she just turned the machine so I couldn't see the numbers. I am a nurse and if you are going to do something like that you explain to the patient and say lets try this and if its to uncomfortable we will back it down - not ignore the patient.   I had broke my big toe a week ago friday and asked her to please becareful as it was still very sore - again she ignored me.  My orthopedic dr asked if I was getting a new therapist.  I am seeing the head of pt department this afternoon.  He is the one who diagnosed me to start with when the back surgeon wanted me to have therapy to strengthen my legs before he did surgery.  I am so thankful it was caught.  My labs have been within normal and within therapeutic range since I started taking my vitamins after surgery last July so this was not related to vitamin deficency. Topic: hypoglycemia
Prior to surgery, especially before I got quite so heavy, I had occasional bouts with low blood sugar. I am now down about 100 pounds and am occasionally experiencing some mild low blood sugar symptoms.  I am concerned that I will develop some of the severe symptoms I have read about here on OH.  I will begin to pay more attention to the carbs I eat as I have always known that carbs, esp first thing in the AM and coupled with coffee was always a trigger for me.  But is there anyone out there who can tell me if I am at increased risk of developing the severe neuroglycopenia I have read about?  I can't imagine what would happen to us if I developed such a debilitating problem.  I am the main income provider and I have a handicapped child!  Will watching what I eat be enough to prevent this problem?

Perhaps it is the hernia putting pressure on your diaphragm, but I think you should have it checked out by a doc.  It could be a sign of something more serious....lung mass, blood clot in the lung, are things that come to my mind.  I am an RN, and that is my thought, what did your niece say?
