Topic: RE: Recurring Incisional Hernia
There several types of surgery for hernias. Some of them include using synthetic mesh. Some of them using biologic mesh. My last surgery used biologic mesh made from a cow's myocardium. It was faulty and I had a massive infection that caused me to have an 8" by 12" cleaved open wound which took nine months with a wound Vac attached to my wound to heal. I had to fire the surgeon to get to a wound specialist who finnally cultured the wound...a request that I posed several times to the surgical team but was not heard. It turned out that I had e-coli and strept in my abdominal cavity. they put in a pic line into my brachial artery and fed me very serious antibiotics for three weeks thus saving my life. This site will help to increase your knowledge about hernias...I still have a fist size tolerable hernia. It doesn't bother me but I had those internal wave like pains very frequently before. Mary

You said the last one almost killed you!  What happened?  How do I get to the hernia web sites? Do you have the link?  Thanks for your help!

Topic: RE: iron deficient anemia
Had my RNY in 2001 and was diagnosed with sticky blood syndrome (I clot too much).  SO I must take coumadin the rest of my life.  Yeahhhh! Right?  No Wrong! cuz if you have any bleeding from your intestines you will become iron difficient...I could not tolerate the oral iron so I get IV iron 1X per week.  They finnally discovered that the bleeding was coming from the mouyh of the old stomach  caused by bile reflux erosion...what to do about this???

There are a couple of good hernia sites one is english one is called "the lichtinstien" method.  It is a prooven fact that any incisional hernia has a 50% chance of occurring...failure of repairs is 50%. I have had about 15 hernia repairs 3 after my WLS.  The last one almost killed me and I still have a fist size hernia.

I have read that some people need to go to weekly shots, but know of anyone in particular. Some people seem to have more problems getting enough B12 than others.
I am only 9 mos post op and have not had any problems with B-12 yet. However, I decided early on to use the B12 patch as opposed to the sublingual B12. The ad claims that it is as effective as injections because B12 can be destroyed by digestion and being absorbed transdermally, this is prevented. I use one patch a week.
They are a bit pricier than tabs, but this is something I wanted to hopefully forever avoid and am willing to pay the extra. You can only find them on the internet, do a search for B12 patch and you will find them. If I were you, I would probably start with 2 patches a week or more but maybe talk to your doctor, I'm not sure off hand how much is supposed to be delivered with each patch.

What kind of treatments are you doing?  I'm beginning to feel my dr isn't aggressive enough.  I do monthly shots and DAILY sublingual but my levels are not coming up too much.  It has been 9 months.  First reading was 146, was 187 and third is 327.  I am having numbness-tingling in forearms and hands.  My toungue hurts daily.  AND I FEEL LOUSY!  Should I get a more aggressive Dr or just go with the program, assuming the levels will just be slow in coming up.  Thanks in advance!  Lori  (I'm three years out and started shots 9 mos ago, before that was just weekly sublingual 2500 mcg)

Boy am I glad to hear someone else experiencing this.  My surgeon, PDP and Gastroenterologist seem to know nothing of this complication w/RNY.  I have found I get light headed if I do not eat every 2-3 hours, and have come up with blood sugar tests as low as 50 moments after eating.  I would really love any information anyone can provide.  Pre-op I never had any symptoms like this, nor did I have early signs of diabetes.   Good to hear others in the same boat!  Wish I had some info to share... Topic: RE: Short of breath, any thoughts?
Shea:  I'm an RN and I'm smart enough just to get myself in trouble.  So here is my dx for myself, and it is making my DH nuts.  I have a huge hernia and I think that when I eat it pushes on my diaphram.  Today we were moving furniture, and I smashed my finger good and I hardly had any breath to cry.  A couple of times today, I've tried to laugh at something idiot DH was doing and my laugh was like a low whisper.  I can run up and down the stairs no problem, bend over - no problem.  And I'm like you I think it is more after I eat.  Sometimes I have had to loosen this danged hernia belt because it rides really high because that is where my hernia is and puts pressure right under my boobs.  Well, that is Dr. Nancy's guess. I really need to let my surgeon know what is going on, but since I don't seem to be in any immediate danger!  What the heck!  Is annoying as heck though!!!  The other thing is some times I bend over and get lighted headed and breathless.  I too think that is because I haven't had enough to eat and drink!  I've had a stress test and lung are great, so what is it? Your guess is as good as mine.  Am I anxious, heck no!  Having the time of my life.  I'm sorry your are in this fix also.  Hoping we will both just out grow the darn stuff.  I'd better hurry because I'm going to be 57 in a few.  Hope things will be better soon.
