Topic: Seroma? MTHFR?
I called the surgeon's office this morning because I noticed a hard, ball-like formation under my biggest incision from RNY 3 1/2 weeks ago. I had been having some pain which I thought would have passed by now, around that particular incision. I was worried that it was an oddly-placed hernia but she said that it was more than likely a "seroma". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seroma I have an appointment with the surgeon on the 10th (in a week). She said that I will probably be okay until then but she will talk it over with my surgeon and see what he says. PS- I have a blood clotting disorder- MTHFR http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTHFR . I am wondering how that will affect things. Does anyone have experience with a seroma post-surgery and/or MTHFR??

Topic: GERD or Hypochlorhydria? (too little acid)

I had an RNY 3 1/2 years ago.  I had severe GERD and was taking Prontonix 2x a day. After the surgery the GERD resolved.  In the last several months I had been experiencing some symptoms again, primarily a sore throat.  Even went to an Ears/Throat Dr. to rule out post nasal drip for the sore throat.  He said that there was irritation on my esophagus that appeared to be from GERD.  My internist put be back on (this time Prevacid) -- but it didn't seem to be working, so I was told to double the dosage.  Still, it has only gotten worse and I started taking Pepcid AD in addition!

Today I went to a nutritionist who said that the problem may actually be too little acid (apparantly, not only does the small pouch produce little stomach acid, but the PPI's (meds) were shutting the acid production totally down, causing my food to ferment and not digest with symptoms similar to GERD).

He suggested I take Betaine Hydrochloride (Betaine HCL) -- [2 tablets with every meal] -- well I started this evening and so far not only do I have the throat soreness, but now the burning goes all the way down, and my stomach is rumbling up a storm. Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this problem, and if so, what helped? ~ Thanks ;)

Topic: dierticulum outpouch?
Hi all, new here to the board but have been with OH for years.  I will be four years out from RNY july 28th.  The past 1 1/2 months I have been having severe abdominal pain with I eat, constant nausea (eating or not).  I had an upper GI which showed a diverticulum outpouch in my pouch.  Doc called me yesterday and said the we are looking as surgery.  He has only seent his happen twice,  (once so happened to be a close friend of mine but her's was a bit worse that mine is so far.)  They concidered her's as a revision, something to do with either the duodenal or jujenol (sp?).  What they found is a portion of my pouch "hanging".  They are doing an endoscopy tomorrow to check for uclers (which he would treat first before surgery, though none showed up on the Upper GI)  and then we would talk about surgery which would consist of going in lap and "trimming" the pouch as he put it.  My question is has anyone heard of this?  and what is the outcome?  Thanks

Keri

Topic: RE: Complications still.( sorry very long)

Hi, My name is Patty and I just found this site. It is wonerful there is a place that other people can really understand what you are going through. I had my wls in 1995. My dr did a modified roux n-y with j hook up. I have had many complications. He bypassed my entire stomach (found out from a gastroscopy test )with no pouch left. After all these years I still have the dumping syndrome. I have gone through severe hypoglycemic swings, pernicious anemia and do weekly b12 im injections. I have a low ferritin level. It went down to 4. Ihave had 4 rounds of infusions with 4-8 infusions per round.I have also had two packed red cell infusions due to severe anemia. My vitamin d is nonexistent and my teeth have been crumbling. I have raynauds now and cannot even get near a freezer. I use to scuba dive but last year i tried snorkling in the warm waters in cancun and my hands turned purple. My thyroid is low. But, the worst is my immune system has gone wacko. I have developed a severe allergy to nuts and cannot even be in the same room as someone with nuts. I have to carry several epi-pens with me at all times and have made many trips to the ER. I lost from 296 (post twin baby weight could not get down) to my lowest was 125. I am six feet tall and currently weigh 145. The iron infusions are the one thing that has helped me with energy. There are months that all I want to do after work is come home and do absolutely nothing. I spend many weekends laying in bed because of no energy.I am currently going through a set of 4 infusions. I had my second yesterday and i feel so much better I was up at 4am fixed several things around the house I had let go. I went out bought many flowers. I got my deck ready for summer putting up the table and chairs and swing, planting flower pots all over and made it look inviting all before I went to work at 11:00. Afterwork, I stopped and got more flowers and food to do a barbque. We had a wonderful evening. The first in a long time. Anyway ask your hematologist about your ferritin level. If you do need an infusion, I hope it makes you feel like I do today.

Topic: RE: Post-op Depression
I will say that the thought of actually being "skinny" or say 125lbs I can be sure would only be possible thru WLS. I can diet and lose, but only maybe 40 and then either gaining back 40 or 45. I wish there was a statisic that showed how many of the WLS patients with  complications over 6 months post op were not following the plan right. I have read so much about it, I can go to RemedyMD and read ALL positive stuff on WLS, everything is super duper great. Then I go to OH and get some 411 weather I want it or not. But I know I would rather be knowledgable about it all.  I need to ask you....could you tell me if you were concerned and if so how much, on weather or not you might end up with a lesser quality of life then what you have now?

The ultimate decision has to be yours. I knew it was something I had to do after many years of failed diets and new diagnises of Sleep A[pnea, High Blood Pressure and Asthma. I did it for the health benefits...but I do like the way I am beginning to look!

I would like to be thin, but that is not even my care anymore. All I can think of is that I will become diebetic and have to wait and worry to have either a heart attack or a stroke! I also go back and forth each day thinking I should have the surgery then I shouldn't.

Hi Sandra, Thanks for your kind words.  I am sorry that you do not have support from your husband buty hopefully you have another means iof a support system...family, friends, etc.? My husband never came out and said he did not want me to have it but he did initially feel that way. Now that I am much thinner he is happy as can be :)

Dear Jay, I do not know the answer to your question, unfortunately. My husband was specifically researching gastric bypass surgery. Show this info to your surgeon and maybe you will get a better answer. Therese
