Topic: RE: Complications worth the surgery?
Good for you for doing the research, that is the first thing you need to do to be a success at your WLS - be informed. My big worries were success at actually getting the weight off, long term success and keeping it off, and lessening my chances for future complications since I don't live near any medical facilities. The DS looked right for me as far as long term weight loss, and least chance of needing a revision surgery. I know the risks of the surgery were nothing compared to my increasing health problems being caused by my weight. My only regret is not doing it sooner. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Good luck in your weight loss journey!

If you were having sugar problems prior to surgery then it isn't considered *due* to your WLS. You can go to the cheapest doctor or even the health dept and tell them your afraid your having sugar problems again and need to be checked out, you don't even have to tell them about your WLS to get checked for sugar. They will base the bill on your income, if any. Hope this helps some...

Excellent question!

I have had ELEVEN surgeries and 7 procedures in 3 years.  I've had five bowel obstructions including being in ICU and an inch away from dying.

I now have a HUGE incisional hernia that will have to be repaired but I can't do it until I get my husband back to health with is likely to take a year or more (though he'll never fully recover).

All of this has been so difficult on my family.  My children and husband have sufferred great trauma and they have shed many tears.  Watching them suffer is more painful then everything I've been through.  (My profiles has details.)

I ask myself every single day if it was worth it and I have yet to come to a definitive answer.

It's a hugely personal attempt at reconciliation.

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

Topic: RE: Compensation for a leaking band
Hi Marion,

Yes, please have her contact me. This is exactly what I was looking for. I too have had the band removed and the leak was on the band itself. The manufacturer is stating this isn't a problem; however, it seems to be occurring with some patients.

I have consulted with an attorney and he would like to hear from patients, specifically with a leak in the band. Once I receive an email I will be happy to talk to your friend and discuss this more.

Thanks Marion,

Melissa

A friend of mine here in NZ suddenly lost restriction in her band - so an op was arranged thinking that it would be a faulty port or that the tubing had come apart.   When they went in it was discovered that the band itself had a leak.   Her surgery and hospital expenses were  gratis but she did get a bill from the anaesthetist.   A new band was also placed at no cost to her.   I think the surgeon sent the band back to the manufacturer.   If you want I can ask my friend if she would like to hear from you, in which case I would give her your email address.   Cheers Marion

Topic: RE: For those who had a bowel obstruction...
I dealt with the Peterson's hernia and subsequent obstruction approx. a couple of years ago.  This was after going through several bouts of unrelenting pain that could "not" be dxed til literally all H E double L broke loose on the last go around.  I literally thought that I was going to die.

Fast forward...  I had to deal with loose bowels for approx. 1-2 weeks afterwards.  The burning inside feeling (surgical site) lasted for 1-2 months and I was very careful NOT to overdo it much like you are doing.

Unfortunately for me I have had a few incidents over the last couple of months that are making me feel that things are NOT alright in Denmark if you know what I mean.  I am starting to get that strangulated OMG type of pains that last for just a short period of time before they release.  What is scaring me is that I can feel something "slip" inside when it happens.  I am watching it VERY closely.....

Hang tight and I hope that everything works out well for you!

Topic: New here....
Just stumbled onto this board and I have been reading like a dervish!...   I have been battling blood sugar issues for the longest time.  Just now started possibly putting some clues together but not sure if they all fit into one cohesive picture.

Had surgery Sept. 04 so I am just short of 4 years out.  Insulin resistant prior to WLS with rampant diabetes in my family ( I was on no meds and had not turned to the corner into full blown diabetes).

I have never really had tight restriction EVER , even right after surgery.  I have the smallest feeling of restriction only if I eat VERY VERY dense meats, and only then.

I find that if I have any type of carbs,  that right afterwards I will get that sick dumping feeling and then BLAMMO....there goes the blood sugar.  Not so much with protein dense meals, although it can happen to a lesser extent even with them.  It is to the point where I dread eating as I know that I will get that incredible sick feeling afterwards and so totally be wiped out....

I'm wondering if I am possibly dealing with premature emptying directly into my gut?  It seems that I can eat more (and always have been able) even early on.  I have done quite well with my weight and am at goal and maintaining.  My weight can and does fluctuate by about 10 lbs. but that is it.

My main reason for complaint is the blood sugar issues and the sick feeling.  Unfortunately I do not have insurance that will cover anything to do with WLS so I don't know where to turn.

Any ideas?  Sorry for the long post.....

Topic: Compensation for a leaking band

Hello,

As you can see, I was banded in 09/2007. I have managed to lose weight with the band by following the protein and portion control. After about 4 fills it was disovered that I have a leak on the band itself. This was found under a fluoro study.

I contacted the band manufacturer and was told that this is unheard of. I would like to find others like myself to show them that this does happen. Regardless of if your insurance convered a new band, if a second surgery was covered by the manufacturer, or you were cash pay please contact me.

If you have had a leak on your band and you believe the leak wasn't caused by a puncture during a fill please contact me by PM or directly at [email protected].

If you know of someone who has had a similar experience, please pass this on to them.

 Thank You,

 Melissa
