Because you self-paid for your surgery, you will likely have to self-pay for the EDG and the dilation. I suspect this is why you are having trouble getting the referral. The doctor can give a referral but has to code it. When he codes as related to your surgery, your insurance company MAY or MAY NOT pay for it. They may be saying that you have to or can TRY to go through your insurance company. If they get a denial, then you can self-pay. HOWEVER, you have the right to self-pay and then file a back claim with your insurance company. If they pay, you will be reimbursed.
There is no reason to not go forward with the dilation (as long as you can pay).
That said, if you go through the ER, they can't turn you away.
I would not wait on this. You can become dehydrated and find yourself in a real mess sooner rather than later. If you don't do anything else, call the doctor(S) offices today and discuss these options with them so they can guide you.

She needed blood desperately so I am so glad to hear that the doctor did this immediately. I'm sure she doesn't have six weeks of blood transfusions ahead of her; rather, they will give her two units of blood and check her levels every 4-12 hours for two days. Then, she'll go a few more days and test again. Her bleeding is obviously very slow if she's bleeding at all anymore. She may have had a low H&H simply from B12 deficiency and no vitamins or she could have had slow bleeding and it has stopped on its own or she could have a slowly bleeding ulcer or some other internal problem. They will know more as they watch her numbers. If she recovers and keeps the numbers up without them dropping again, they'll be able to be more conservative on the testing and not waste time and money.
I am so relieved that she is being treated and approved the transfusion. She is not going to believe how well she feels in a couple of weeks. She likely doesn't realize how badly she has been feeling as the change was slow.

Hi, I wanted to give you an update on my friend...she will be starting blood infusions today for the next 6 weeks. The doctor told her it was an emergency and started it right away. Also, after he gets the blood levels up, he will be looking at why it got low in the first place. He told her his priority was to get the blood up now or she could have grave consequences. That is what is happening now. Thanks for your concern and thoughts. I know she appreciates it and so do I.

bACK TO CLEAR LIQUIDS CUZ OF NAUSEA AND EMESIS. dOC SAYS I NEED EGD WITH DILATION, BUT SINCE i PAID FOR MY SURGERY MYSELF, MY pcp WILL NOT GIVE ME A REFERRAL TO DOCTOR. hap REFUSES TO HELP RELATED TO ALL REQUESTS FOR REFERRALS NEED TO GO THRU MY PCP. wHAT DO i DO NOW??? i'VE NEVER RUN INTO SUCH HOSTILITY BEFORE, DR S OFFFICE IS SNARKY AND LIED TO ME ABOUT NOT NEEDING A REFERRAL, SO i SCHEDULED MY EGD FOR MONDAY, i CALLED HAP JUST TO BE SURE, THEY SAY NO, YOU NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY DOC . Topic: HELP!! Anyone like me? 20 months post op!
I've had 3 near fainting spells.... I wake up every morning nauseated... I've been having more headaches. My heart races from time to time. I've checked my blood sugar a couple times and its been low and then one time it was high. I've NEVER been diabetic.
Am I eating wrong? My habits haven't changed since I've done this. I've maintained my wt. give or take 5lbs for 10months now.
Now BEFORE you tell me to have my labs checked... I HAVE. They are PERFECT!!!
I have been diagnosed with a penetrating ulcer, back in July.
Anyone else with these symptom's?
I take a prenatal vitamin, try and get my calcium in everyday, and take B12 once a week. The only thing I don't do is get all my water in. I've never been a big drinker.

Your going to think I'm dumb, cause I work in nursing, but when you hear the doctor say over and over, we can't find anything wrong, and your feeling like your going to pass out, you know different.

Oh your very welcome, when I read your post I got scared because I am one of those who gets yeast infections alot at leasst I use to so I figurered I would ask this question for us both lol.
I am in the process of my tests (sure are alot) and hope to have the surgery in the near future. How are you doing with it?
