AZ,
I have just read all of your and Juldon's posts and this sounds alot like what I have going on as well.  I just had a G-Tube placed (just under my rib which hurts with each breath, burp, laugh, etc.) placed with my most recent exploratory laparoscopy Sept. 5 where they found an internal hernia, placed the g-tube and found atrophic gastritis of the remnant stomach.  I am in the hospital now again due to increased pain and nausea with dry heaves (my 4th admission since July).  I also had a biliary bypass due to a stricture of my common bile duct and now they are thinking that I may have sphincter of oddi dysfunction.  Back to the remnant stomach though, I am draining 300-500 cc's of bile, some days with coffee ground looking old blood and sometimes with red streaks of blood noted and the docs are talking about having to do a subtotal gastrectomy because the stomach just appears to be non-functioning.  Have any of your docs mentioned this?  Please feel free to contact me anytime it is nice to know there is someone out there who understands what you are going through.  Is scarey when the docs you trust have to tell you, I am just really not sure what to do here...leaves ya feeling pretty hopeless and bewildered about what is going to happen next. you can call me at 4073236641 or email me.

Please Please go have it checked out. I had a pain just like that and ended up in emergency surgery for a perforated stomach. Read my story in the post above.

Topic: Perforated Stomach
Hi , I just wanted to see if anyone has experience this. 1 year ago I went to the emergency room with a severe pain on my left side under my rib. I was rushed into emergency surgery because I had a perforated stomach by the stoma. They fixed me up and 1 year later I have gained 35 lbs and seem to be gaining everyday. i also now have hernias all over especially a large one near my belly button . they say it was caused by the surgery last year. I made an appointment to have the hernia fixed but now i am thinking I need to see a bariatric surgeon just in case the original RNY was compromised. I am not in pain just devastated at the weight gain . What do you think?

Topic: RE: HELP!! Anyone like me? 20 months post op!
Hi, I'm just over 4 years post-op and have severe post-prandial hypoglycemia (after eating).  I've seen 8 Endocrinologists have had a zillion labs (all of which come back Perfect), we've tried Acarbose to slow the carbs from absorbing, had nuclear scans, MRI's, Upper GI's, none of which have explained the problem.  I was getting warning and I'm lucky that I have a service dog that could alert when my sugar was falling.  However, I have now been bottoming out without warning and falling a great deal, due to this I am no longer allowed to drive.

The symptoms I experience when my sugar is falling are as follows: lightheaded, confused, headache, shaking/trembling, confusion, and disorientation.

I have researched until I thought my eyes would bleed, I have a whole packet I give to each new Doctor listing all the test results including labs, previous Doctor's contact info, a timeline of symptoms starting at the surgery date, copies of the abstracts regarding the limited number of research that has been done and a letter begging for help.

I wish you the best of luck and sadly the only advice I have is that you stay persistant, don't accept "I don't know what's causing this" as an acceptable answer, and continue to post because I truly believe the only way some of us will ever get help is through networking between ourselves.  Lorrie

Topic: Help! Weird Pain...
Hey all,
Well for the past week I've been having pains on my left side. It started about where my ribs would be, but just on my side. And now I'm having pains on my back, just a little lower.
I had my follow-up appointment yesterday and asked my surgeon about it. He said it could possibly be a muscle strain. My next appointment is in 3 weeks and he said if it doesn't get better, then to call him and get in sooner.
It first started after I bent over and felt this kinda pulling/popping feeling.
I don't want to wait that long, it really hurts! It feels like someone is stabbing me. It hurts when I bend over or get up from sitting. And now it's starting to hurt while I just walk.
I don't know if this has happened to anyone else. I'm not sure if this pain could be because/from the surgery. I'm hoping it's not something wrong with my kidney or something.

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Glad to hear you made it thru okay and he thinks he found what the problem is.  Sorry to hear about the pain though....you may need more than they typically give since you have been on meds for a while and your body naturally will build up a tolerance.  I really hope this is your answer.  You have been struggling with this a lot longer than I have but I can relate to the feelings of hopelessness and depression.  I have been chronically not feeling well for about 9 months now with the most acute episode lasting the last 6 weeks and not being able to work during that time.  It is frustrating to "know" that something is wrong but to have to wait an interminalbe amount of time to either get an answer or have some resolution.  I am waiting on biopsy results and then am hoping the tube can come out.  This week just to add a little fun to the mix I had a kidney stone/UTI probably from not drinking enough and the inactivity in general.  Hope you are feeling better soon!

Well, I had my surgery yesterday,  I am still in the hospital.  He ended up doing a liver biopsy as well because my liver enzymes were extremely elevated as well.  It turns out that my jejunum was full of bile and there was evidence that it was kinking up.  My Dr. thinks that this may be the problem.  I am not so sure yet, won't be able to tell until some of this soreness subsides.  There has been alot of bile drainage coming out of the tube today also.

I am hoping that this is it, but I have been getting so down about it that it is really bringing me down.  I am quite depressed and actually broke down a couple of times today about it.  People just don't understand that this has been very stressful for me, taking pain meds every day, the tube placement, and not feeling well every day.

I hope I get some sleep tonight, didn't get any last night at all.  I am going to see if I can get some more pain meds now.

Will let you know how things go.

Julie

Topic: RE: Any complications after VSG?
Hello - I am a pre-op VSGer as well and was just about to post the same question OH.  My surgeons have their own Yahoo mail group and the complications I've seen are severe nausia and not able to keep anything down.  One woman is going through that now.  I spoke with my doctor about it and he said that about 4 patients a year (out of hundreds) get this extended period of nausea that resolves itself in 4-6 months.    You are welcome to sign up for the group.  They welcome those who are researching or have had the Duodenal Switch / Distal Gastric Bypass, the RNY, Vertical Gastrectomy (VG, Sleeve Gastrectomy), or LapBand who wish to discuss, ask questions, get support, lurk, share experiences or update members on their progress.

These doctors have probably done the most VSG's than any other so it may be a good place to ask your question.  Good luck with your surgery, mine is scheduled for 11/12/08.

I am 2 years PO and I have been having similar symptoms. I know the low blood sugar can cause you to wake up with headaches, can make your extrimaties numb and tingle, I have to keep a close eye on my blood sugar, it mainly happens when I dont eat enough proteins and complex carbs. My heart too will race. When you checked your blood sugar and it was high, had you just eaten?
