Topic: Adhesions Causing Pain on both sides of Abdomen??
Hi,

I'm new here!  I had RNY in August 08.  I've lost close to 90 lbs.  In late Feb 09 (6 months post-op) I started to get pain mostly in the lower left quadrant.  I have undergone 2 lysis of adhesion surgeries (one in April, one in May) and continue to have SEVERE pain in my abdomen.  It is lower left, upper and lower right.  My surgeon wants to do a 3rd surgery, but what else can he find that he didn't the first 2 times?  My surgeon is renowned in his field, so I feel like a crazy person that he hasn't fixed my pain.

They are going to take out the gallbladder, although there is no proof that there is anything wrong with it.  Also, the surgeon is dismissive of the lower left pain (thinks that it is ovarian in nature and therefore, not his issue).

Any guidance, advice is welcomed and much appreciated!

Thanks,

Maureen

Topic: RE: Stuck???
I'm having the same problems.  Started this past weekend.  I can only do liquids and although I am having movements they are about 1/8 of the norm.  I called my surgen Wednesday and told him of the full/stuck feeling, not eliminating as usual, and the cramps/discomfort when I do eat.  I'm a year out with no problems until now.  Lost 120 lbs and will probably lose a lot more over the next few days.  Anyway, I see my surgen tomorrow and although I think I have a blockage it's not so servere that I can't get anything down and I'm not throwing up.  You should seek professional help.  My cousin had RNY a few year ago and ended up in the hospital because she was so busy partying that she did not realize that it had been 4 weeks since she had a movement.  I enjoy my life but I am also in tuned to my body and take everything I put into it and everything that comes out seriously.  So, please call your doctor.  Better to be safe than sorry.  I go to my support group meeting monthly and see my doctor there all the time.  I also just had my one month check-up.  It's like my warrenty just died. :-)  Good luck and I'll let you know what I find out.

Topic: RE: COMPLICATIONS...not good for the cash pay patient
I may be late in my post and I do not mean to get personal. Do you have regular health insurance? The reason I ask is I am a cash pay, but my insurance will cover any complications that arise from the surgery. Hope it all turns out OK for you.

hi vickie. thank you for your thoughts.  a fistula is a hole that has formed between the pouch & the unused stomach.  the acid that caused the ulcer has eaten a hole through the pouch into the unused stomach.  the pouch isn't connected to the unused stomach but the pouch sits on top of the stomach so they touch.  it allows the two to communicate; in effect, food goes into the unused stomach where its not supposed to go & you gain weight. My fistula is small right now & i don;t think any food is getting in, but it will have to be monitored to see if it gets any bigger.

Topic: RE: Internal Hernias and Bowel Obstructions
Hi, Blest!
I just rejoined OH, and saw your post. I hope by now you are recovered!
I had the DS in 2004, did great until last summer (like you!). I am now recovering from my third operation and sixth hospitalization since then. Internal hernia's bowel obstructions x4, incisional hernia most recently.
Don't get me wrong, I love my surgeon, and thank GOD for him. I would do it again in a heartbeat, just surprised it took 4 years to have problems surface.

Topic: RE: Hernia's after surgery
I have had four hernias since my rny. Each one was bigger than the last.
So I am a guru about that little demon.
As for as you having stretched your pouch. Try this tip measure arund two cups of cottage cheese and see how much of that you can eat. If you can eat the whole 2 cups then you have indeed stretched it. And if you have they can do a procedure called a stomphyx that can reduce the stoma which is probably what you have stretched.
good luck

Topic: RE: Low Blood Sugar Post RNY or Lap
before surgery i was always running in the upper 100's now I am averaging around 75-93. I thought i was having low glucose until I went and had ac1 done and my average in that was 5.5. What I did find out was my iron was low and that caused me to have symptoms of having low sugar
