Topic: RE: bladder and kidney infection
I am 9 weeks out of surgery and have had the signs of bladder infection for 3 or 4 of the 9 weeks, never did go to doc, just increased my fluids and it seems to help! Not sure why it comes and goes, must not get enough fluid in at times. Good luck on your journey!!

This has been the best decision besides marriage and kids that I have ever made!!

Topic: RE: Adhesions Causing Pain on both sides of Abdomen??

Many things can go "wrong" and even after recently having surgery.

Surgery isn't something one should rush ino; however, It may finally repair whatever it is going forward.

I'm to trying to promote or convince you to have more surgery; however, it is easier on the body, pain will decrease, and I'd think the last thing you'd want to is to have some kind of "episode" the causes chaoc and you are rushed to a hospital by ambulance. It's happens.

Get a second opinion and/or meet with surgeon again to disccuss all of your possibilities.

I hope you better soon!!!!

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

Topic: RE: Need Help!!! Abdominal Pain!!
Hi All,
Sorry it took me so long to get back with answers to this problem, but a lot of diagnostics have been going on.  So here is what they've done to me so far.  On May 11th, I got scheduled to see a Gastric Intestinal Surgeon, about the partial small intestinal block.  But the problem there was he couldn't see me until June 15th.  But that was to long to sit, and wait, so I called my RNY Gastric Bypass surgeon.  He made am appointment for me on May 14th, and the receptionist  doubled checked to make sure he didn't want to see earlier.  He said that was fine, but if i started getting a fever, or it the pain got worse, either call him to come in early, or go the the ER right away.  I went to see him on the 14th, and he figured it was a bacterial infection. I thought this was better than have my gallbladder out for no reason. This is not common, but it does happens in about 25% post RNY Bypass Surgeries.   What this is, is a build a bad bacteria in your old stomach.   We don't use the stomach  like we use to, so the bacteria grows.  This happens because the stomach is not flushing itself like it use to.  My Dr. prescribed strong anti-biotics.  One that is usually used for people with malaria, and I had to take it for 14 days, 2 pills 1200 mg a day.
Well I  took my last pills 5/26th, that same day I woke up with a back ache.  As the day went on, the pain got worse. The pain was so bad, that I actually started to cry.  My mom offered to take me to the ER, but Thur. 5/27 she called my RNY surgeon.  He decided to see me at 2:45pm. I got there @ 2:20pm,, bit 2:45pm came and went.  At 3pm his nurse came out, and said  "It's going to be long, because my Dr was doing a procedure."
So I left, and went across the street to the ER.  They gave me 3 shots of morphine, and it didn't touch the pain.  They did a CT scan with contrast 3 ways, one you drank, two was a enema, and the last was injected.  They found during this CT scan was an enlarged Gallbladder.  They did an Ultrasound of my Gallbladder..  I got back to the ER, and the surgeon was waiting for me.  He told me what was wrong, and I had a choice of that nite, or the next day. It was urgent to have it done right away, or It could burst. I decided to have it right away.  What was wrong was, an extremely large gallbladder,(the largest this surgeon ever seen), but there was no stones..  He removed it, and the sharp pains have.  I still have incision pain, and shoulder from the air they put in, but I'm steadily getting better.
I suffered with this for almost a year, and I had these same test in 08/08, and they found nothing.  I also had exploratory surgery in 9/08, and everything was fine.  I don't know if they miss read the tests, or if it had to be acting up in order to find it.  All I know is I'm feeling a heck of a lot better, and I can't wait until the incision pain is gone, to see if this was my problem.  So far so good.
I saw what one guy wrote here about complication from RNY surgery, and how for every one complaint, there are 100's more, and how he doesn't want his girlfriend to have RNY surgery.  I ways I don't blame him.  The Dr that did my RNY surgery asked me if I would have this surgery again.  I told him, "No, I wouldn't.  Yes, I was thankful that my cholesterol is down, and my diabetes is basically non existent.  But the side effect like my upper right abdominal pain, constant diaria, sugar reaction, nausea, and vomiting.  These never go away.  Basically, you're trading one kind of problem for another.  Yes high cholesterol, and diabetes are life threatening, but there are some side effect that happen years later are also life threatening.  Also RNY complication years later are life threatening, and harder to diagnose.  You have to have a surgeon who's skilled in RNY, to understand how your plumbing works, or it nearly impossible to figure out what's wrong.
Sorry about the long threat, but I thought detail of what been going on was needed.  If anyone was any questions please feel free to email me at [email protected] , just label it health question.  I'll be more than happy to give you answers to your questions.
Take care everyone, and I hope everyone finds out soon what's wrong with them.  I will keep you up to date on my condition.

Go back to your original surgeon, or find another bariatric surgeon. ER docs won't necessarily know the ins and outs of complications from bariactric surgery.

I am 19 months post op from RNY...Gastric bypass in August of 2007...I have not had any problems until now.....I have been to the ER 2 days in a row....I have severe pain under my left rib...my stomach is bloated and it feels like when you exercise and the muscles are jumping in your leg...my stomach is doing that....I feel like there is something stuck in my chest....I have had waves of nausea...the ER doc did cat scan first night....said I had a urinary tract infection....2nd night another cat scan with contrast...Doc said there was nothing but I was in such terrible pain that they hooked me up to IV gave me pain med, stuff for nausea, potassium and sugar water, my potassium and sugar were very low...then he gave me something to relax my intestines.. I dont feel as twisted inside, but I am still so uncomfortable, bloated, swollen and I can feel everything I drink and eat....I have read alot about strictures....I have vomited a little....I have not had a bowel movement since Wed. Earlier this week like on Monday I starting hurting and it has gotten worse...I could not have a bowel movement so I took a laxative and an enema....it worked on Wed. so I'm not sure what is going on....I keep burping alot....Does anyone have any advise....the er doc said if I come back in they will have to call a specialist and do a scope....should I just give the relaxation med time or go back to the er doc.....PLEASE ADVISE.....

Topic: Finally figured out my problem! Candy Cane Roux Syndrome
am currently 4.5 years out from my original RNY surgery. After experiencing 2 years of stomach pain and weight regain, I went to my surgeon a month ago and told him what was going on. He seemed genuinely concerned and ordered a slew of tests, including an Upper GI, Cat Scan, ultrasound, bloodwork, etc. None of the tests showed anything that could be the cause of such severe stomach pain, so he did an exploratory surgery yesterday.

He had said that he was concerned about a possible internal hernia or bowel obstruction, and if nothing else, gallbladder inflammation would result in him removing it.

Instead...I wake up to find him explaining to my mother that he revised my surgery. Basically, I had the candy cane roux limb, which allowed me to eat a normal amount of food. The food then would stay in the roux limb and cause the upper abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting. In addition to that, my stoma was stretched out about 5 times the normal size and my pouch was bulging out in one directio. He removed the limb and cut off some of my small bowel (approx. 8 cm.) and reattached it, and fixed the stoma and pouch while he was at it.

In other words, after 4.5 years, I am back to day 1. It's exciting...but not what I was expecting at all. Hell, the night before my surgery I was doing my normal things, even making a casserole so I would have leftovers for when I was recovering. Now I'm on a liquid diet for a month and am pretty much guaranteed to lose all the weight I originally lost and gained back.

It was just supposed to be an exploratory surgery, so I'm hoping the insurance company will cover it, since it was pretty much medically necessary to end the quality of life altering pain I was experiencing.

Anyway, that's my experience. I was shocked to say the least, and still am. I'm feeling great though, despite just having surgery yesterday. I've been through this before, and the memories make me nervous, but I'm excited to know that I am not fully to blame for my weight regain.

Highest Weight Before Surgery: 360
Weight at Original Surgery, 12-04: 330
Lowest Weight in 2006: 200ish
Current Weight: 305
Age on day of surgery: 19
Age today: 24

I already had my revision but I'll answer your question. yes, I have regular insurance and they wouldn't cover anything related to the band. Not even complications! What a bummer but I knew that going into it. Thanks for getting back to me.
