Topic: RE: Gastric Fistula
Hi:
I had RNY on August 30, 2005, and had complications from the start, including a gastrogastric fistula. After seven endoscopies in one year, four years of constant pain, every ulcer medication known to man, I still have TWO fistulae and ulcers. I am having revision surgery on January 18, and I am hoping and praying for an end to this.
Many small fistulae resolve on their own, or with medication. The problem, as you noted, is when it does not, you don't have a functioning pouch anymore, because everything you eat empties into the old stomach and you don't feel full until you've eaten a full meal. I feel hungry all the time, too, but didn't for about 16 months after the original surgery.
You have my sympathy - I finally have insurance to cover the revision and a surgery date. Good luck.

Topic: 3 Weeks Post-op & Very Frequent Sharp Stabbing Pain In Left Side Of Abdomen
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else post-op? I am 3 weeks post-op RNY and for the past few days I have been having frequent sharp pains in the left side of my abdomen. I can just be sitting or even walking and all of a sudden I'll get this sharp pain that will double me over then it'll go away...then a few minutes later or even 10-15 minutes later it'll happen again. Plus it still hurts my pouch when I drink or eat anything. So I'm in constant pain.
I know, I know I'm a nurse and know that I need call my surgeon about this, but I have had nothing but issues since I left the hospital after the surgery. I also have chronic abdominal pain, (right side) so I know that isn't the problem - plus I'm only able to take about half of my chronic pain meds so my pain level is even higher than my norm.
So, if someone else has been through what I'm experiencing now please let me know what you ended up doing and what your end results were.
Thanks
Kim

Topic: RE: REVERSAL OF RNY
HI LAURA THANKS FOR WRITING ME BACK. THIS THING CAN BE SO STRANGE. I WAS NEVER ABLE TO EAT FROM DAY 1. THERE IS NO RHYME NOR REASON. I HAD MY FEEDING TUBE 2 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. THERE REALLY IS NO GUARENTEE THAT I REVERSE I WILL EVER BE WITHOUT IT. I RECENTLY HAD A BOWEL OBSTRUCTION AND WORKED FEVERISHLY TO RESOLVE IT APART FROM SURGERY AND WE HAVE DONE THAT. I SPENT ALOT OF TIME BEING NAUSEATED AND COMPAZINE HAS BECOME MY FRIEND. MY LIVER HAS BEEN AFFECTED AS WELL AS MY KIDNEYS STEMMING FROM A PROTEIN MALNUTRITION. I HAVE HOWEVER MAINTAINED BETWEEN 140 AND 145 WHICH ACTUALLY IS WITHIN MY NORMAL RANGE I DIPPED ONCE TO 135 LBS WHICH I LOOKED ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I CAN EAT SOME THINGS BUT NOT ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN MY WEIGHT AND THEREFORE I RELIE ON THE TUBE TAKING FEEDINGS AND FREE WATER FOR HYDRATION AT NIGHT.THIS ALLOWS ME TO WORK AND MAINTAIN SOME NORMALCY TO MY LIFE. I ABSOLUTELY DREAD THE THOUGHT OF A REVERSAL. I HAVE HAD 8 SURGERIES INCLUDING AN ENTIRE REDO OF THE RNY. I HAVE NO POUCH SINCE IT WAS EMBEDDED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE LIVER AND COULD NOT BE REMOVED. SO, IT KIND OF GOES FROM MY ESPOGHUS THROUGH THE PROXIMAL ANASTOMOSIS DOWN INTO THE LIMB THE FOOD JUST SITS THERE AND MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I WILL EXPLODE. BUT, IT SURE TASTE GOOD GOING DOWN IN SPITE HOW AWFUL I FEEL AFTERWARDS. FOR ME I FEEL MY BEST JUST NOT EATING PERIOD. I STARTED COUNSELING BECAUSE A FEAR OF BECOMING A TRUE ANOREXIC FOLLOWING THE SURGERY OR PIGGING OUT AND GAINING THE 180 LBS I DID LOSE. THAT IS MY BIGGEST FEAR. I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL AND WOULD APPRECIATE STAYING CONTACT WITH YOU. THERE IS NOT TOO MANY OF US OUT THERE TO SAY THE LEAST AND THANK GOD FOR THAT....HOPE YOUR CHRISTMAS WAS FILLED WITH HOPE AND LOVE....PATRICIA

Topic: RE: bleeding from rectum
If it's dark it could be undigested blood from the surgery that is passing in the stool or it could be leakage of bleeding from the staple site which if a small amt could be normal seepage. Blood is not digested so it is noticable in the stool. Or....if you are eating/drinking anything red it could appear to be blood especially if other tests are normal. Hope you feel better soon!

Topic: RE: Ulcer & now a Fistula
Thanks!
My surgery is scheduled for January 12, 2010. I have a pre-op consult January 4th & I have a couple of pages of questions to ask my surgeon. After he answers them I'll post the questions & answers as a reply to this post. Unfortunately this is such a rare condition, to have both an ulcer & fistula there's not much info out there. Good luck to you also & God bless you. You'll be in my thoughts

Patricia,
I am so sorry I am so slow responding, but I have not been on this portion of the board lately. I have had horrible complications for the last now almost 2 years...my first 4 were text book WLS heaven...and then boom unable to gain or maintain my weight no matter what I ate. I had surgery January 27, 2009 to revise my RNY to a proximal allowing my intestines to absorb more of what I ate. It backfired big time...by May I was down to 82 pounds...so they put a PICC line in giving me 2400 calories of food a day via the PICC plus I ate as much as I could orally...I gained up to 107 pounds...but in september developed sepsis due to the PICC line becoming infected,..so out that came. They wanted to do a complete takedown right then of my RNY, but I just was starting to feel good and could not stand the thought of another surgery...so I made a deal with the surgeon that if my weight dropped to 95 pounds I would contact him immediately, they would put a feeding tube in and do an emergency take down. The lowest I have gotten to was 97 pounds, but I was sick then, and the moment I got better I got back up to 102...I maintain right around 100-102 pounds and I am okay with that as long as I feel good. I just seriously look like I need a cheeseburger...LOL
I hope if you have to have a reversal it works and you will become healthy!

Topic: RE: Hypoglycemia & Pituitary tumor
Hello all, I am almost 8 years post-op RNY, and have managed to keep 140 lbs off. About 4 years ago, I started complaining to my Dr about night sweats. He said I was starting menopause. I then mentioned that I was confused and dizzy along with the sweats, is that menopause?. Although I mention this to him every time I go, only recently did he mention that I might have hypoglycemia and that was because 2 months ago, I had such a severe event that I almost passed out and then slept for 2 hours in the middle of the day (that is something I never do). He stated that I need to go back to eating like I did when I first had surgery. That high protein and low carbs will help. Also, that I really need to watch when I eat simple sugars as this will trigger an event. I have also noticed that if I go a long time without eating (more than 5 hours when awake) that seems to predispose me to an attack. I am much more careful now as that last attack was very scary. I would recommend keeping some of those diabetic sugar wafers around for when you have a bad attack, otherwise a glass of juice or a piece of fruit contains enough sugar to balance back out. Good luck.
