Topic: Leakage?

Hello all,

I had surgery 12/15/2004 and it was very successful.  I haven't had any problems since then, until now.  I have had a persistant burning/pain for quite a while.  Friday it was more than I could take.  I thought maybe I had bowel blockage.  I went to the urgent care and they immedately transported me to the emergency room.  They thought it was my appendix.  After a catscan the doctor said there was nothing wrong with me and to go home.  On my way home from work yesterday I get a call from the emergency room.  A nurse has called to tell me that they reviewed my catscan and I have a leak from my pouch into my old stomache and I need to call my pcp.  I called my pcp and her nurse called to tell me they submitted a referall.  My surgeon retired so I no longer see anyone for my rny.  How serious is this and how is it usually fixed?  I know you are not all doctors but you are a very knowledgable bunch.   Any insight would be very helpful as I feel in the dark about all of this.  Thanks!

Topic: Possible Internal hernia?
Hi All. I had lap RNY January 5, 2009, have gone from 242 to 135. All has been great until November when I was walking thru the grocery store and out of no where I got the most horrible pain, below my breast bone, kind of a burning ache and into my back. It lasted about 15 minutes and went away as fast as it came on.  NO more pain until this week. Waiting in a restaurant (had not eaten) had a sip of iced tea and the pain began. Slowly at first, then it came on with a vengence. I couldn't stand, sit or anything. This time it was so bad I began sweating and thought it might be a heart attack as the pain traveled to my upper back. My husband took me to the ER, where they ran cardiac enzymes and other blood tests, as well as an EKG and followed up with a cardiac stress test.  They could not find anything wrong with me, especially since the pain subsided completely after I got there (figures)  I did find out that I passed all the cardiac tests withflying colors and was told I have the heart of an athelete though! :)

I called Monday morning to my surgeons office where the RN told me it sounded like an internal hernia, and that she would run it by my surgeon to have a CT and possible endoscopy ordered.  I haven't heard back as of yet, but after reading everything about the internal hernia, I'm worried sick at how dangerous it is.  My pains don't seem to be associated with eating (both times I have not eaten within 3 hours of the pain) have had no bowel related problems.  Has anyone else had this type of sudden VERY painful pain that subsides as fast as it comes on?  Thank you.

I had the Roux-ny and I have had nothing but problems.  I think the lap band is much safer.  I am a litttle over 2 years and still have a feeding tube.  But that is just me.  I would not recommend the roux,

Well, A lot has happened since I posted this thread ......

Starting around the 31st of December I would get nauseau every time I would eat and my stomach would cramp and spasm.  This continued to happen even when I went for just liquids (protein shakes) - they seemed too thick or something.  When I talked to my surgeon he scheduled a scope thinking that ther emight be some type of stricture or somethings.  The scope was on the 7th and although inflamed everything look ok.  My surgeon admitted me at that point for severe dehydration and scheduled a swallow test so he could follow food the rest of the way down into the Y.  The sallow test came out fine, but still cramping and things when I eat or drink.  So a exploratory Lap. was scheduled and he was going to put in a feeding tube to get some nutrients in.  During the surgery he found that my small intestines were trying to wrap themselves up in the Y.  Anyway, with that repaird, my small instestince are VERRY  unhappy and inflamed.  I just got out of the hospital this past Thursday with a TPN bag and a feeding tube.  Thesurgeons thought process is that the spasms etc. are my bodyreaction to the arearrangement.
I am giong to my surgeon weekly.  We are hoping that evenually the settle into norm soo,

I am not sure this was any help, but trust your surgeon and he will get you through

your symptoms sound similar to mine.. I'm waiting to hear back from the surgeon.
Can you tell me anymore about what your symptoms were?

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi!  Yeah, I've had releif only in the past 10 minutes.  But, I fear it will start again in the morning as soon as I eat something....   But, thanks to your original post, I'm going to pay MUCH closer attention to my discomfort and pain and still call my surgeon in the morning to schedule an appointment to have a look.  I don't want to end up with necrosis and twisted bowels etc.  So, thanks so much for your post and for being so open with your experience.

I will definitely post again if the pain continues and when I see my surgeon.

Many thanks!

Wow!  I'm so happy to find this post!  although, now I'm scared and worried I'm being a hypochodriac.  but, I have been having these killer pains in my mid-lower back that make it incredibly uncomfortable to sit or stand....only laying on my back seems to releive the pain.  The pain becomes dull after a few hours until I eat ANYTHINg....even the smallest amount of food leads to incredible discomfort  and feels like I'm getting jabbed in the stomach or lower back with a knife or something.  It's also slightly releived when I pass gas....but, then the pain returns.  So, I keep trying to make myself burp thinking it's just chronic gas or something. but, it's been over a week since it started and I think that the pain is getting progressively worse.

Looks like I'll be calling my surgeon tomorrow......

I got the lap-band 5/08 and have had nothing but problems. Has anyone has this reversed or replaced with the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?
