Topic: Weight Loss Related?
Hi, I had Lap RNY in July of 2004 with relatively minor issues. I have been having off and on lower back pain since I gave birth last Feb. It has recently increased and I went to see my PCP concerning the issue. He did an exam and thought it was spasms and prescribed muscle relaxers. The pain is not going away. I have also noticed bowel movement changes, they are becaome much smaller and harder no matter how much fiber/water I intake. Could these be related to an obstruction? Most obstructions I read about on the board seem to have higher abdominal/stomach pain. My pain is very low back/tailbone area. Any ideas?
Topic: Exploratory surgery for stomach pain....
I posted this same post on the RNY board, so I apologize if you've read it before! But I wanted to post it here in hopes of receiving more responses than the other board.
Long story short, I've been having stomach pain since Valentine's day weekend, was hospitalized for 3 days due to it. Have underwent a CT scan, ultrasound and 2 HIDA scans only to find a hiatal hernia. I have no symptoms at all from the hernia so I don't really think that's my problem. During this time my surgeon was out of town for 2 weeks so that has delayed my treatment. He received the results from the last HIDA scan today and his nurse called to tell me that it was normal (again) and that he is recommending exploratory surgery (ugh). After much discussion with the hubby, and total trust in my surgeon, I have decided to move forward with the surgery. I mean, this pain has not eased up one bit since it's onset. I have to find out what is wrong with me. I can't keep living on pain killers!!
Not that I want something to be wrong with me, but I'm afraid that they will open me up and not find anything. I will feel like a total fool. I haven't been able to talk too much with my surgeon due to his busy schedule since his return of his vacation. But I'm wondering if due to my numerous (7) abdominal surgeries if I could have something as simple as adhesion's causing the pain.
Oh yeah, the pain is on the upper right side, kind of under the rib cage (in the gallbladder area), it's sometimes worse after eating, but sometimes it radiates in the area around my belly button and my lower stomach.
First let me thank all of you that hung around and read my mini-story! But what I want to know is if anyone else has had a similar experience and would you mind sharing it with me? His nurse said if they found nothing it would be an outpatient procedure, but obviously I would have to stay overnight if they found something.

The only way to truely test for an ulcer is to have an upper endoscopy. You can find a local Gastroenterologist to do this test without going 2 hours to your surgeon. My surgeon never does my endoscopies, I always go to my gastro doctor. They specialize in this and do them all day long. Most even do them in there office under twilight sedation. You will never know you had it. They give you an IV and you wake up when it is over.
If it is truely an ulcer, you need to have then test during the endoscopy for HPylori - a bacteria that causes ulcers. If it is HPylori, then you need to be treated with Prevpac - a combination of Prevacid and 2 antibiotics. If it isn't HPylori, then you will get a PPI - Proton Pump Inhibitor = Protonix, Nexium or Prevacid and Carafate to coat your stomach to help heal the ulcer.
Either way stay away from spicy foods, caffeine, milk, citrus fruits and juices - that is all I canthink of now.

Go back and pick up any subjects "roll call" and you'll get a thumbnail of the faces there., some chatter, but you'll see so many of us are far, far out from surgery

You really do NOT want this dx.
There are a few ppl around who've had the sx to remove a chunk of pancreas and have reported no change in symptoms.
There was a report on this last year at ASMBS. I suspect it, as well, but I just do not want to know.
