Topic: RE: Newbie Question About WLS Complications
Thanks for your responses. It helped me realized that with this surgery there are so many factors neither I nor my surgeon have control over so I will have to pray for the best and prepare for the worest.

Topic: RE: Unexplained Abdominal Pain
I had the pain - on and off - had a cat scan, etc, etc,   long story short - they took GB out and fix a hernia and untwisted the intestines.
2 weeks after surgery - the pain hit again. Same as before. Strong, bad ... twisting me, putting me on my knees on the floor with my head on the floor - the pose referred to "child pose in yoga" Could not talk. I too 2 pain pills.  Call the doc,  but since surgery was so recent - I did not wanted to go back to ER.  Finally the pain went away after a few hrs (and a few pain pills).  next 10 months the pain was coming back and forth.  There for 1 week, gone for 2-3 weeks.  Then back again.  It felt like another hernia - obstruction.  A cat scan of course did not show anything... like the first time.  My doc wanted to operate - but I was still hoping that maybe we do not have to.   So I decided to wait and see.   Eventually - the pain got very frequent.  Almost every time I ate more "solid" foods.   So I called the doc and got another surgery... 2.5 hrs- he found another hernia + twisted stuff.  Fixed that good.  Now - am I pain free? not really.  This time I think I have an ulcer.  or something.  But the pain is maybe 1-2 on a scale to 10. And only some days. So - I can live with that.  If anything - probably adhesions.  By now - I had 3 abdominal surgeries, I would be surprised if I did not have adhesions....

Complications:
hernia
GB failure
Another hernia
reactive hypoglycemia.
ulcer

That's all - and guess what - I am still a "happy" WLS person.  except the last one - none of the previous could be prevented and nothing that my doc did - except the surgery itself -lol.

The ucer - probebly too much coffee, too much wine, too much - whatever... But  that's the only one that I could "prevent"

Topic: RE: reverse gastric bypass
Does anyone know of an excellent surgeon who does reversals in Ohio? I had RNY 10 years ago and I am tired of always feeling nauseated, pain in left upper quad and vitamin, iron deficiencies. Does the reversal fix the deficiencies? What are the complications of the reversal? I wish I never had this done. I had to gain 20# to meet the criteria. When the surgeon was questioned about complications she told me I will just need to take a vitamin a day. Never told about all the other feelings.... I feel I was mislead.... did do research before hand and never really came across much complications. Now I want to go back to "normal" I am willing to go thru surgery again (not fun) to be pain free and absorb nutrients like I should. Can anyone out there help me find a fantastic surgeon in Ohio? Thamks! Lisa

Topic: Help! I weigh 99 pounds
Hi,
I  am thankful to have finally found this forum because I have been going through hell and back the past year. I had Lap Gastric Bypass in January 2003. I was 22 years old. Things went good for a long time-it wasn't until 2008 when I found out I had an ulcer. I trusted the doctor who was treating me though I felt uneasy. I have been on Carafate and Protonix for a couple years now. I took the meds faithfully and followed my diet. A year ago he noticed my weight loss and decided to send me to see a new Surgeon at the University of Michigan. His exact words words were that he wanted me to see a new surgeon to see if I should get a reversal but that he wasn't even sure he would touch me. I went and saw the new doctor and he did an endoscopy and found a large deep ulcer as well as narrowing. He did two dilations and they did not help. The ulcer pain was horrible. I kept losing weight at about 3 pounds a week at times. He eventually decisded to have a revision because of the ulcer. He made it clear though that if there was anything else in there relating to the original surgery he would not touch it. This was scary to me. At that point I was at 115 pounds and was a walking skeleton. I was scared. I needed help yet at the same time I felt that this surgeon had an idea there was more going on. I decided to find a second opinion. Afterall, I wasn't even eating other than a half a piece of toast a day because of nauseau vomiting and pain. It was hard finding somebody who would help me because not many surgeons want to undo another surgeon's work. To make a long story short, I prayed about it and I found a doctor at home that is helping me. In fact, he decided to do his own endoscopy and found not only an ulcer, but a fistula, strictures, and a small hernia. He said that it was not all in my head regarding the weight loss. He is an am amazing man and I am hoping my instincts are right because he is my last hope. I now weigh 99 pounds. I am thirty years old with two kids that are 5 and 2. My famikly is worried, friends are worried and I feel whispers when I walk. I was at the point of giving up. God didn't let that happen though and lead me to my new doctor. He is doing a revision on the gastric bypass basically cutting out all the problem areas and will also be putting me on a feeding tube while I am there to gain weight again. Lots of risks with it though, in fact there is a 25% chance of fatality from what I am being told. No choice though-I want to live again... I am still researching to see if there are others in my position. Need some support-it has been a nightmare. The surgery is in a week.

Hello,
It sounds like you are in the same boat I was (still am) in so I felt compelled to reply to this. Please find a doctor see what is really going on. I went on for two years dealing with the same problem. It took me getting down to 100 pounds (that is my weight right now) and still losing. It is a shame I have had to suffer so long but thankfully I have found a doctor who will finally help me. I wondered if there was something wrong in my head because I wasn't eating. Not true though-the doc did an endoscopy and found two ulcers, a fistula, narrowing, strictures, and a hernia. No wonder I look like this! I just thank God that I have found this surgeon. I have no choice but to get a revision and will need to be on  feeding tube for a few months (maybe less). My advice is that you are right now where I was about 4 months ago. Trust your instincts. There is probably something not right (don't mean to scare you). I hate to see you suffer because take it from me, it can be dangerous.

Really. My doc said not to worry til it's under 100.

Oddly, I have a customer who is not WLS. She has ITP, and has had platelets as low as 12! She had to be hospitalized. She is the first person I've known to have a more serious case.

If yours acts up, you will SEE it on your skin.

Please remove fingers from the panic button til you get the story. I've lived with it for 30 yrs and really, except for occasionally looking like someone sprinkled me with cayenne pepper, I'd never know. I don't FEEL anything. It doesn't seem to be changing anything else.

Just look at your appt as an info gathering period. Write down the questions. Be methodical so you're not freaking out,, unable to take in data.

1. will this disease kill me?
2. soon?
3. will I feel bad?
4. do I have to change or undo my surgery?

Those are the biggies, right?
