Topic: RE: Exploratory surgery for stomach pain....

I had RYN 11/12/07 and I have had many of the same complications as you have described.... I have had 3 small bowel obstructions, gall bladder removal, hernia removal and the last 2 surgeries I had perforated holes in my intestines and Ecoli leaked into my blood stream.  Since then I have been in and out of the hospital with vomiting, nausea, and this burning pain in my stomach.  All my test come back negative...... It makes you feel as if your making the whole thing up.

My life is so stressful......I was a person that never called off sick and now I don't have anytime left on my job.  I cant make plans to do anything with my family because I stay sick more than I'm okay.   It seems that if I eat anything seasoned or with a little bit of grease it will trigger a bad attack that last for hours at a time.  Sorry for rambling on and on, but boy do I feel your pain....  I never knew things would be like this!

I am almost three years out and had the pain of which you speak in the middle of the night last Wednesday (today is Sunday).  Suffered for 6 hours and went to ER.  Told doc about my RNY and he did a CT scan and found I had intussusception of the small bowel.  The intestine had telescoped into itself.  Two hours later a lap sugery to pull it out of itself and voila, I am feeling tons better.  Don't know how rare/common this is, as I have had mixed messages from fellow WLSers on the subject.  Sometimes they say the intussusception can correct itself, which may be why nothing shows up on your CT scans...other things I have read say the CT scans sometimes miss this condition, but they are visible on xray.

hope you find the cause soon!  sounds like you have a good doc in your corner.

anyone experienced this after lap RNY?  I am almost three years out and recently had this problem...it is where the small bowel telescopes in on itself...had it surgically repaired this past week.

what are the chances of reoccurance?

When I had my kinked bowels, I had no nausea, no vomitting and problems with my bowels.  Just on and off sharp pain and tons of burning pain.  I had a combination of adhesions, a twisted bowel and a 1 inch hole in the intestines, so the burning was from fluids leaking.

Topic: RE: Reversal of RNY any and all stories are welcome......

I had severe problems with nausea after my surgery that never went away.  I had several EGDs, Gallbladder removal, and was on SEVERAL medications for nausea all at once. (My surgeon actually told me that he thought it was all in my head at first, so you are doing good if your surgeon isn't saying this.)  I had two feeding tubes... let me give you some advice on that one..

I don't know what they are giving you through your tube, but there are several types of formula.  Some of them cause you to dump more than others.  I KNOW this doesn't make sense because it is going into your old stomach, but TRUST ME... You still dump.  I tried several different kinds of formulas with my tube, and I still dumped.  My doctor ordered a pump.  I pumped continuisly through the night.  The dumping went away.  I am sure that it was because i slept through it, but that is all that matters.

I am surprised that this is an option that they are giving you so fast.  They usually wait for at LEAST a year.  I had a reversal done 10/23/09.  Even after the reversal.... I thought I was going to live with the nausea forever.  Now I VERY rarely have problems.  There is hope.  If they do reversal, it will not go away over night.  Your stomach has not been used for a little while.  I was a lot further out before they offered reversal to me, so it won't be AS BAD for you.  It is kind of like when you had you origional surgery..  Your stomach will have to get used to food all over again.  You can eat "normal food" a lot faster than before.  The longer out you go, the more your stomach will adapt.  I will still have some dumping, but I don't have to worry about eating away from home anymore.

Good luck.

I was at the point that you are now.  I had my surgery reversed.  I had ulcers, and a hernia before surgery that had already been repaired.  I had two feeding tubes, and I was also a walking skeleton.  I was stopped by a drug dealer trying to sell me crack because I looked like a crack head.  People that new me made hurtful comments.  I am glad that you found a surgeon willing to help you.  Where do you live?  I am in Texas.

I had RYGB reversal 10/23/09.  It saved my life.  By the time that I had it done, I was so weak that I couldn't hold my head up.  Do you know how many of these surgeries that your new surgeon has done?  I knew that I was in good hands.  I prayed long and hard before my surgery, and I had several people doing the same.  I can eat now for the first time since my RYGB, and I am no longer sick.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a PM and I will give you all the info that I can.  I know how scary this is, but this is your chance to be normal again.

You will be in my prayers.

I had the pain off and on, did the MRI's and CTscans with no results. Ended up in an operation and it turned out that I had scar tissue that "glued" my bowels to my abdomin. Been out of hospital a week, feel hella better!!

Prenatals have lots of iron, since they are for pregnant women.  I agree with Vitalady, it makes no sense.  How can one be so anemic and you are very anemic with so much iron.  I am actually the opposite.  I have normal hemoglobin, hemacrit, RBC and iron but a High Ferritin.

If I were you, you need to see a Hematologist that specializes in blood disorders.  This isnt' a case for a surgeon or PCP.  You need a specialist.

Topic: RE: Unexplained Abdominal Pain

Hmm wondering too what this may be?? Here is my story. Anyone PLEASE respond if you may know...

I am having some recent issues and have no idea what could be wrong. It started on Wednesday night, I had terrible stabbing pains in my right upper abdomen. I am over one year post-op with roux-en-y. I have lost a total of 157 lbs and and now weigh in at 155. (About my history I suffered with severe stricture to the opening of my pouch and had a total of 8 EGD balloon dilations up until my 8th month post-op. Since then I have been able to eat solids just fine. I had a tummy tuck 10 weeks ago and my stomach has healed very well.
I had the attack on Wednesday and Thursday went in to the ER for the severe stabbing pains. I was told that I most likely pulled a muscle and was given Bentyl a stomach muscle relaxer and Tylenol then sent home. That same evening Thursday I had another terrible attack and went back in to the ER. They did more bloodwork and performed a CT scan. I drank 500 mL of the special cool-aide. They said everything was fine and sent me home with Zantac and Zohfran for nausea and heartburn. I again had another attack Friday night and went to the ER Saturday (early this morning). They performed x-rays of my upper abdomen and told me it was fine. BUT apparently the kool-aid/barium lit up in the x-ray screen and they diagnosed me with constipation since none of it has passed through my system. I have had the kool-aid done twice before for previous CT scans and it always gave me severe dumping. However this time it didn't I feel extremely bloated and burning. I do not have a fever but am concerned of an intestinal bloackage or impacted bowel as I have heard that this is common for us to develop. Very worried! I have already taken two strong laxatives and now I am waiting to see if anything will pass. The doctor said that my intestines are sluggish. I am passing gas but otherwise just waiting as I have not had a bowel movement since Wednesday. However the attacks started on Wednesday and that morning I had a ribbony BM that became loose diahrea at the end. So I am very concerned and would appreciate any advice I can get whatsoever.
