Topic: RE: Petersen's Hernia

Wow! That is quite the complication! Petersen's hernia is no joke. I hadn't followed up on this thread since I posted in April, as a reply to the original poster, until I got a reply to my post today. I did end up seeing my original surgeon. He did an EGD and colonoscopy. I was told that I couldn't have Petersen's hernia, because when I did the bowel prep, I would have had extreme pain doing it to the point of unbearable if I had the hernia. The tests showed not much of anything. The conclusion is that they think I probably have adhesions and some narrowing in areas that causes my pain. The problem now is that I keep having extreme diarrhea all the time, no matter what I eat or do. I also take pain medicine daily, which should constipate, not lead to this state. So I'm trying to figure out what's causing this. I had just gotten to a point where the meds I was on were keeping the pain tolerable for me where I could function pretty well. And now this! I think it goes to show that this surgery is full of complications, maybe years after-- here I am almost 6 years out!!

Try discontinuing calcium and vitamin d if you are taking them. Sounds like hyper alchemical due to a vit d toxicity to me. Worth a shot for sure.

That pain is likely due to hypercalcemia. I make that assumption due to the erroneous recommendation of very high levels of calcium supplementation. If you are supplementing with high levels of calcium, try stopping.

Marianne,

Honey please don't give up. I too had not only a J-tube feeding tube, but my body was rejecting the tubes, so I had a PICC line with TPN. It has been a nightmare & I can sooooo relate. I do have an implanted Gastric Pacemaker, that has given me so much more hope. I still have occassional nausea, but NOTHING like what I had before. I am located in Indiana. Where are you? I was just curious who your surgeon was & where you had yours done. I would get another opinion for sure. I would say reverse me....no more going back & forth. Reverse me & leave me alone.

I'm 3.5 years post-op gastric bypass surgery and I've been having occasional left/middle upper quadrant severe pain. Once to three times a day. It comes on fast and last about 15 minutes. It is so severe that I become hysterical and crying and practically screaming in pain. I've tried heating pad, rubbing it, acid reducer, pepto, warm or cold drink, pain medicine or Xanax to calm me. Nothing really helps much. I'm desperate for help. My surgeon is 2 hours away. Hopefully someone here can help me.

OMG ladies I am so happy to have found you both. I am going through the same stuff right now! I had RNY in 2011. Suffered from severe iron deficiency anemia reactive hypoglycemia. This past March my surgeon reversed my RNY and gave me a sleeve. I have been through Hell with this too. Stricture and now gastroparesis that has forced me onto disability. I have had a PICC line and TPN. It is awful. My surgeon says my only hope is to go back to a RNY. OMG I feel so lost!

Yes it could be a hernia they are common in this type of surgery. Also make sure they do full blood work some vitamin deficiency can make your gut hurt along with other symptoms.

Ask your doc about a possible hiatal hernia ...that can cause pain in the upper left quadrant.

I know I am late in responding, but I just saw your reply regarding post RNY problems. What ever happened? I have had issues/surgeries after my RNY in 2003 also....

Topic: Bowel Obstruction/Spigelian hernia

August, 2015 pain and vomiting sent me to urgent care.  A CT scan determined surgery was needed to displace my small bowel contained in a rare hernia called a Spigelian hernia. Surgery was performed within 24 hours with eight lap holes.  I was discharged from the hospital within 26 hours of surgery which felt way too soon. Pain was controlled with Tylenol and wearing a velcro band.  It took five to six weeks for pain to disappear completely.
