Recurring Ileus
I am now 3 yr post op RNY. For the past year now I have been getting an ileus about once every three weeks. I was hospitalized every month for nine months straight, sometimes more than once a month. An ileus is partial or complete non-mechanical blockage of the small and/or large intestine. I have already had two bowel obstructions operated on. At first they said they were caused by my low potassium. But by the third time my potassium was fine. Because of all my complications I have been on narcotics since my original surgery. THe doctors thought the narcotics had something to do with it, but ruled that out. They have never been able to give me a reason why and have told me they are not preventable. I can't go on living like this, in and out of the hospital. I have a 7 year old son. Each time I go in to the hospital I have to have an NG tube and I hate those! I tried refusing them at first, but that only prolonged my hospital stay. They make me stop eating and drinking my entire stay. This has totally screwed up my system and now I can't get rid of the rest of my weight. I'd appreciate any feedback!
I also had similar complications with bowel obstructions. You have NOT screwed up your system! Don't believe that for a minute. The best thing that you can do is MOVE. Walk or do whatever excercise you can do and do it and drink 8 glasses of water a day. Your body is designed to get stronger and repair itself. After my bowel obstruction, emergency surgery and second hospital emergency stay for pain, followed by constant severe pain for one month, I literally ceased eating altogether. I had a feeling that if I ate I would have another complication. Forget about the NG (I hate it too!!!!) Start walking and moving. Your body will begin fixing itself and you will LOOSE the WEIGHT!
